I've been on myO since... since about 2003 or so. I've been a longtime member I think. So I want to know what's going on with myO, and why I'm being abandoned, it stinks, and I want answers, and solutions too.
Giving VV a virtual monopoly over things by leaving myO to rot is not the way. Having 2 competitive ways for people to blog, interact, and connect with eachother will essentially give you the ability to draw twice as many people to your sites Adam! Having a bigger audience lets you have a bigger market share and more people out there to buy into things like your premium service, and up your hit count to make those advertising dollars multiply. It's not just good service to those of us who are already on myO, but it's also a good service to attract new people who are looking for something different and BETTER than myspace and facebook, in short, it's good business.
In reading over what you're saying here, I think you hit the nail on the head. To me, it doesn't really matter how long someone was on MyOtaku, anyone who spend even a little time there is going to have some sense of what the place was about.
Funny thing about me, for years I've been saying it was the art that drew me to TheOtaku and MyOtaku, but it was the people who kept me here (and there). Nowhere else online have I come across so many people who wer warm, friendly and willing to share and help each other. I used to sign guestbooks and part with the line "if you have any questions, just give me a shout, if I can't answer it myself, I can find you someone who can." (or something to that effect) because that's the way a lot of us were (and still are).
Where Worlds makes an enemy of me is the fact that it's ONLY YouTube videos that can be embedded when speaking of video content. I've made no small issue of my own strong disliking of YouTube in general. For those of us with other video hosting accounts on other services, that's an insult to our ability to use our own content here. It's an unfair restriction, and in no uncertain terms a form of censorship, on people who can't or won't use YouTube. The limited customizations to the Worlds here, from the few BG image options to the unsatisfactory color scheme choices (I don't like any of them). I do use Worlds none the less, but for any of the specialty things I had planned, I'll just have to blog them elsewhere (probably on MyO) and simply post links here. Till things improve, that's all I can do, and I had high hopes for what I could do with Worlds too, but we weren't exactly given 100% straight info about the limitations to content.
A sense of betrayal, a sharp decline in activity in comments and posting on MyOtaku, a misleading text input system, and pages so overly scripted that some computers were made physically ill are all high reasons people have walked. I chose to stick it out, hoping to see things get better, and knowing there are few people with the courage to stand up and speak out about the decline and ask for results in improving things to slow or reverse that decline.
