Yeah, some people take their "love" (read: obsession) of gaming a bit too far, at times. It really takes the fun out of games when you have to play with someone like that, especially if they're just being jerks.
I doubt you want to sit there and play obsessively for days on end, since you're going to be busy later on, but I'm sure that the time you do spend on practicing will amount to better skillz. It's always that learning curve that gets ya at first. After that, it comes more naturally.
(Hmm, how does staying in one place to get a beating become learning? Imagine a math teacher saying that if you wanted to learn some formulas, you had to sit there and watch him mark most of your answers as wrong - without him giving advice on what you did wrong, so you can correct it later.)
