I am liking how the series is using shogi in stronger ways to highlight character development. Shion's honesty, Satoru's deception, Makoto's strength and love and Shinji's calmness all show in their shogi.
You're hitting on part of why the show fascinated me so much. It was really weird how something I knew nothing about, could be used so effectively to portray the characters. That and I like the change in atmosphere along with the music when the matches are going full out.
Also, as odd as it sounds, the way they smack the pieces down with a click just seems so resolute. It's like that too reveals what kind of person they are.
The ending, in my opinion, was rather weak, but I still enjoyed the show a lot.

Yeah, it is definitely a scene that will always stand out in my mind when I think of Rose of Versailles. Any piece of fiction would kill to have a scene that emotional.
And I think I ran into the first episode of Shion no Ou where the style changes! Can't remember whether it was ep17 or 18, but EVERY character looks completely different, and I was like, "WTF JUST HAPPENED." It is so weird.

The scene at the end of ep36 where Oscar confronts Marie Antoinette and tries to get her to peacefully resolve things with the citizens...
That might be my most favorite scene in the whole show. I remember watching it over and over again. ;___;
omg this week has been so hectic that I forgot there was a new ep of Kimi ni Todoke!

And now you understand why I dug on Shion no Ou so much. Just wait until they start running out of money and the art style completely changes.
Also, I didn't know you were watching Rose!! OSCAR IS MANLIER THAN YOU ARE.
