Actually, I thought the whole period thing was kind of refreshing, in that something like that never comes up anywhere. It's more the lol casca raep tiem stuff that made me roll my eyes.
In regards to Casca, I remember watching the first few episodes of Berserk way back when I was in my first few years of high school and both groaning and laughing heartily when Guts mentioned how he didn't know how or want to deal with her "woman troubles".
Though looking at it now, it's rare that any manga or anime these days (even some of the better ones) ever address real-world events and things like that. Hell, no one ever mentions a bathroom unless it's gonna be played for laughs.

I cracked up the first time a fan said they hoped Miura wouldn't die before he finishes the manga. But apparently that's, like, the fandom's mantra.
The manga is crazy. It seriously disturbs me. btw, the anime leaves off around the end of vol.13 :P
And you'll also want to read the first arc of the manga, since the story is compleeetely different from the first episode of the anime. Oh and you might want to read an arc that was cut from the anime. (IIRC, it occurs immediately after Guts and Caska bust Griffith out of the King's castle.) Though to be honest, I don't remember it being all that essential to the plot anyway...
The Claymore anime is good for the first 22 episodes or so, and then it veers off at the end ... there are really two directions in which the ending could have gone, and Madhouse chose the better path, but it still wasn't great lol. Still a good series, though.
I haven't watched berserk yet, but I have been reading the manga. It was recommended to me when I noted that I wanted to read something similarly bloody as Vinland Saga.
I got it, and loved it. I understand that the anime has to tone down some stuff...
And yes, they way the author releases chapters is scary. He better complete the series... or something...
Claymore and FMA are apparently rather alike in the fact that their anime adaptations go skittering somewhere else while the manga keeps trucking along with its original intentions. The published story for Claymore is actually quite good, and I was saddened when OneManga ceased-and-desisted with scanning it.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from with that. It's a subject everyone loves to skirt around, lol.
But scenarios like rape and similar things can definitely be eyeroll-worthy when served with a large side of ham. =p
