I remember seeing a preview for Sunshine Cleaning a while back ( ... probably a long while back; don't remember how old the movie is), and I think my sister watched it on Netflix streaming, so maybe I'll sit down and watch it soon. Thanks!
You know, I wasn't planning on seeing Inception at all, because everybody I know has been all, "OMG GO SEE INCEPTION NAO EETS SO EPIC," which just made me want to dig my heels in and refuse to see it altogether (partly because they all said the same thing about Avatar, and they were horribly wrong). But I might have to see it now. :O Your review tipped the scale.
Also, I don't know if you've already seen these movies (because I was too lazy to read that freakishly long list at the end of your post), but I think you might dig Sunshine Cleaning and Sophie Scholl: The Final Days. Very different movies with very different aims, but they're both really good. I wanted to buy Sunshine Cleaning after I saw it the first time.
What I liked most about Pale Rider, I think, is that when you get near to the end of the movie you start to realise that it's almost like a Western version of a super-spy movie, except it's directed from the perspective of the normal people. Sure, on the one side you have this group of downtrodden dirt-panners trying to survive against The Man, and their collective courage is bolstered when The Man with No Name joins them.
But when you think about it, it's really obvious that Eastwood's character has a really intense score to settle with The Marshall, and it 'just so happened' that the town he picked to come play preacher in was run by a man who had direct ties to The Marshall.
And then there's the story of the family he stays with, whose status quo is shaken just enough to nudge them all (except the young'un) in the right directions.
So much material there, and yet none of it conflicts or steals spotlight from any of the others.
That is true, he doesn't make you invest emotionally. Right on with the rest of the review as well. The only other one worth getting into based on your review, is Pale Rider. Sounds interesting. Btw, how goes the movie site? 100 things... something. I would visit it again if I'd remember the name. :(

That fight scene in Inception was epic. I'm telling you, teleport here and we'll go see it. I liked it, but my opinion is about the same as yours. My brother and I both groaned at the end, we were making bets at each other and then Nolan slapped up in the face for it.

@Ducky:
All it takes is one evenhanded review. ;D
