I've always thought the names to be ridiculous. But I've always pushed it aside because, well, its Gundam. But overall I've always enjoyed this movie because of the odd twists and turns. Everytime I watch it though I want to just take scissors to it and cut out the romance element. I have no problem with romance in Gundam, but this one is always just, DAMN!
If you ever watch the original, go for the compilation movies. They cut out all the bad stuff from the original series (or so I hear), and they quicken the pace of the story. Don't watch Zeta Gundam without seeing the original, either; believe me, it is a highly confusing experience. >_>
I really should check out more of the UC Gundam timeline. I've never watched either the original Mobile Suit Gundam or Zeta, although I've seen both 08th MS Team (I even own it) and Stardust Memory.
Yeah, that twist with Gato was particularly frustrating. It was just so dumb and clumsily handled.
Romance is definitely up and down throughout Gundam. There's some solid tragic romance in Zeta Gundam, for instance, but then there's other stuff that is just idiotic.

Pretty much what I thought when I watched Stardust Memory. Good solid animation and action, and fairly decent characters until they throw the whole romance element in there. It just felt so rushed, it was like one minute Kou and Nina weren't an item and then suddenly we skip ahead a few months and they are. It might have felt more natural if we got to see that time, if this had been extended by at least a few episodes. And then they complicate it by making it a freaking triangle involving Nina's past with Gato. *facepalm*
I think it's a fact that Gundam does not know how to handle romance and emotions other than the tragedy of war, at least until they came out with 00. That's another reason I feel 00 is the best of all the Gundam series, it just hit all the right levels.
And I think the weird names is one of those IT'S THE FUTURE kind of things.

@Shinmaru:
I'll do that. I'd rather do that actually than watching a ton of episodes, because I know original Gundam is around 50 or something like that.
Thanks man. :)
