I really hope you are getting a 360 :D I love mine to bits, although I don't get to spend as much time with it as I want... On the plus side that usually means that the games I want to get are cheaper as I end up buying them later XD i'm still playing Fable III for goodness sake *laughs*
Jumping into the second is doable, but I think playing the first one will definitely make you appreciate the others more.
Like . . . the first one was flawed in that it got repetitive, and Altair's actor isn't nearly as charming as Ezio's. Still . . . regarding the characters, there's a lot of really nice plot twists and a total mindfuck ending that basically set the internet on fire - it literally ended with the character going "...what the fuck?!"
The thing with the AC games is that even though the main point of the story is the assassins killing people in historical periods, there's larger framing story that is actually really deep and interesting, and you only ever get second-hand information about the world through reading e-mails and other reports. In the first game, in between the stints playing around in your genetic memories, you can walk around and try to piece out these puzzles to learn more.
The big conspiracy story is actually a bit part of why I love the series now.
And then once you finally start accepting that story, it makes the end to the second one straight up badass.
Oh no, dude, they're both the same price. The only reason it wouldn't be would be if you were looking at the 4gb 360 and not the 250gb.
And if you are looking at the 4gb, then I would cry woe on your head. Y'alls gonna be needin' that hard drive space, yo. You might think you won't, but you'll be sad to not have it if it comes up.
Y'know, Mass Effect 2 is gonna be similar to Mass Effect 1, which is similar in ways to KOTOR (but with more direct-action killing). Just sayin'.
Other 360 games to look into . . . definitely the Assassin's Creed games (2 and onward is significantly better than 1, though 1 is cheap so hey), Batman: Arkham Asylum, the Gears of War games, Red Dead Redemption and/or GTA4, ROCK BAND . . . oh! Actually, that last Transformers game (War For Cybertron) was impressively good, so I could suggest that too.
I'm trying to picture myself in front of the 360 games at work right now, trying to remember what other system-specific games are also out for it . . . yeah, Gears of War and Halo are the big hitters mostly . . . OH! Alan Wake! That'd probably be one up your alley.
If 360 is to be your future, that'd be my starting points. Although . . . heh, well, y'know if you were to go the other direction and get that other system, you could have Alexa, Becky, Red and myself on your PSN friends list . . .
Do eet! Just do eet! Portal, portal 2, left for deads, plenty of fighters, plenty of shooters, and a buttload of rpgs. Also, high quality arcade games. Like Limbo, Super Meat Boy, Outland looks pretty good, clash of heroes is a fire emblem type strategy game. If u can't tell by now, I highly recommend it.
If you want something with pretty graphics, but a laughable story and even more laughable animation moments, try Magna Carta 2. The battle system was interesting enough. (You also get to hear JYB be even moar melodramatic than usual. You also get to hear Bebop!Jet as a moonman. It's amazing.)

I'm kind of eh on Halo, mostly because I played the original on the Xbox and wasn't really big on it. Assassin's Creed I am interested in, though ... sounds pretty cool to me.
Assassin's Creed alone is a good reason to buy the system. It has hours and hours of endless fun. I am going to buy a 360 this summer as well and I already bought the games I wanted for it.

I actually got a 360 very recently. My dad got it from a thrift store for around 40 bucks. Unfortunately, it Red Ring of Death'd about three days later. We spent 8 hours fixing it, and it didn't work, but then my dad tweaked something and it's been perfectly fine ever since. I haven't played it a lot, but I have played a bit of Portal, and I really enjoyed it. The graphics are great and the 360 has some really good games in my opinion. I would say get one if you can! :)

Hm, maybe I will play the first, then, since it's pretty cheap now, anyway.

Do I really need to play the first Assassin's Creed at all, or would it be cool to jump in on the others?

PS3 is a bit too pricey for me, and there's more stuff I want to play on the 360, anyway.
Alan Wake is one I forgot about, but I'm definitely interested in it. I heard the gameplay is OK but the story is really good.
