Otakon eventually put a cap on attendance, but last year they decided to drop it and just allow everyone. I guess they liked getting registration money from 22,000 people. :D
If I remember correctly, Otakon has a cap on how many people can attend the convention, right? Or has that changed? (Or was it even a policy? I remember reading that somewhere lol.) If that's the case, then I'd wager that's why it stays in the same place -- no need to move around, if you don't have to deal with continuous growth.
The location situation has been chaotic because 1) AX has not had access to the Anaheim Convention Center for the last couple of years and 2) Even if the SPJA did have access, AX is probably too big for Anaheim now, anyway.
Right now they're trying to find a semi-permanent home. Last year's experiment in Long Beach was pretty unsuccessful; lots of people complained about the venue -- justly, I believe -- and the surrounding area isn't anything special.
This year, though, was a vast improvement. The Los Angeles Convention Center is more than big enough to house AX, and there are plenty of places to go around town. Only problem is there aren't any hotels nearby, which is why the SPJA offered free busing from hotels to the convention center. With a few tweaks, I think the LACC could be a good home for AX. It's almost assured to be back there next year, anyway.
Hehe, I love vicariously experiencing cons through other people. Am jealous that you get to do all this stuff with your siblings; my sister would rather defenestrate herself. ^^;;

Does AX's location change every year? Otakon is always in the same place. And we don't have a manga library. >_

I wish I knew! I'll ask my friend Gabby - she talks to her more often. Probably something really insanely accurate and well done. She's intense.
