I dunno, I'm guess I'm so used to seeing bouncy, idiotic characters be utterly random and mistaking that for "humor" that seeing one who is legitimately written well (and I do think Pinkie is written well) is refreshing for me. Plus, I think she's used enough to where she doesn't get too tiring. I noticed in the first season there are a couple of stretches where she is not used or barely appears in episodes. I think the writers are well aware there are limits to her usage.
And, yeah, I get you with the Azumanga comparison. This show obviously isn't as hilariously mean-spirited as Azumanga could sometimes be (seriously, that show is like moe with freaking shark jaws), but it has that same core of eccentricity and friendship.

I don't get the love for Pinkie. I mean, she amuses me, but I find her a bit tiring. But it's not like I have massive "hate" for any of them, she's merely not as high on my list as others. Despite all that, I did spend a heinous amount of time customizing one for TC to make it show-appropriate. :P
You fiiiinally got the comparison for me. MLP reminds me a lot of Azumanga Daioh; maybe not in its purest sense but in that kind of vague reminder-er way. It's like...Azumanga for kids or something.

Actually, when I sat down to write about Applejack, it was kind of difficult for me because I wasn't quite sure what to write about her -- maybe it's because of what you write, that she hasn't had as much time devoted to her as other characters.

I have to agree with your character ordering. Pinkie Pie > Fluttershy > Rainbow Dash > Twilight Sparkle > Applejack > Rarity. And I have the Pinkie Pie toy to prove it. (Thanks, Kat. Derp)
I like the small yet important trend I'm seeing with revivals of old 80s cartoon series. Both MLP:FiM and the new Thundercats give new life to their respective franchise while injecting a real sense of story, character, and world building.

@Miss Anonymous:
She was kind of meh for me at first, too, but she grew on me a lot more as she showed more personality.

Heck yes Pinkie Pie!
But man, I must be the only one who doesn't love Fluttershy. She's just kinda meh for me. :/
