Also, I decided to take a cue from what TC is doing (and what Des did) and split thoughts on longer series into the chunks of episodes I watched. I think that will help me give those series their due and be a bit more specific in my commentary instead of condensing everything into one paragraph at the end of the week.
Heh, although I'm also going to start taking a hint from what you're doing and keep my thought's on different chunks of a show together and just label each chunk with the episode numbers instead of separating them in one post.
Yeah, I actually enjoy the quick pace most of the time, but I think this is the one instance in Brotherhood where the swiftness of the episode works to the detriment of the emotional impact.
But it's still affecting either way. It was definitely a bit dusty in the Shinmaru household when Roy says, "It's raining." ;_;
Anyways, yeah, I've kept my mouth shut about Hughes' death in front of you for so long. DDD:
You are right, though, the pacing was off. The first series definitely handled the death scenes more slowly, and with more pathos: Hughes getting killed by Envy was intercut with flashbacks to him promising to help Roy succeed, and Ed thought he saw Hughes waving to him on the train... things like that. The manga scene was quick, but not in a rushed way. More like a "I just punched you in the stomach" way, really. XD The second series death added some extra things, like Hughes reaching for the phone, and Envy hanging it up... whereas in the manga scene, the phone was just shown hanging off the hook, with Roy yelling into it and Hughes presumably already dead. The simplicity was a lot more affecting in this case.
And both the first anime and the manga ended with the scene with Roy by Hughes' grave, which... yeah, I bawl every time when he says "It's raining." But this version gave you a chance to recover with all the investigation stuff at the end. IMO, a sad episode should leave you sobbing through the credits. XD

Just wanna say that Escaflowne is one unexpectedly crazy ass series. Enjoy as it spirals into insanity. xD
