Thankfully, I never encountered that particular injury, but I did witness it up close. The lancing was both disgusting and interesting at the same time.

Being a ski racer, I encountered the black toe every year. But unfortunately, whether I lanced it or not, the nail always fell off. But it takes a month or so to fall off, and then another 3-6 to grow back. At least it doesn't hurt at all the rest of the ski season after it falls off :-)

I might prefer black toenail to ripping-toenail-off-with-doctor's-office-door. That was fun.
And then so was the ripping-it-off-more-with-a-chain-link-fence. I finally just pulled the thing off myself.
I had black thumb once, though. Slammed my thumb in a door and had to lance it, too. Fell off in about a week, grew back in eight.

Whether it hurts much or not, your brother is still pretty badass.

This was a thoroughly disgusting post. Good idea on your part to add the Damon video at the end though. Helps to balance things... a little.
