Hm.. I was confused about the question for a moment after reading though the rest of the comments. Essentially, you're questioning skin contact when washing the inside of a drinking glass.. There's no need for that if you have a sponge/scrubber (which should be replaced often... you'll know when). Regardless of the size of the glass, your fingers should be able to guide the cleaning thing without rubbing along the inside.
....but what do I know? I drink from a pitcher now.
The warning is actually against making a fist inside a drinking glass. A flat hand with a rag or scrubby down inside is no more dangerous in a glass than any other breakable/chippable/could-cut-you-if-something-is-wrong-with-it dish out there. The relatively small lipped nature of a glass is what makes it vulnerable to pressure coming from the inside, thus the danger of cracking it without much effort. Like several have mentioned, the thicker the glass, the less likely you'll be able to accidentally exert enough power to break it while cleaning it by hand.
Dishwashers really are a wonderful thing, though I've had a glass come out broken in pieces from that too. *shrug* At least I wasn't physically in contact with it when it happened.

That's odd. Putting my hand in the inside of the glass while washing it is what I normally do. Of course, I would often bring a soapy sponge with me and apply some lather on the inside. If I'm only washing one glass, I tend to just apply some soap in my hand and apply the lather right away.

Never heard that, but I always use a sponge anyway.Sorry bout your pinky. I need to get on the touch-base train as well, but I just hit EIGHTY today, and within half an hour I was being asked to run Heroic instances (regular dungeons set on SUPER hard) so, you know...I'm the top hunter in the guild, and a go-to DPSer if I do say so myself. ^_^
yikes o_O i didnt know that washing a drinking glass can be so dangerous! Usually, I dont have to really "scrub" the insides of the glass unless there is some dried up juice/milk left in there because I didnt rinse it out/leave water sitting in there/left it on my desk. in that case, I would just pre-soak it and then add some soap and rinse until all the soap was gone??
I use a sponge... not my hand directly... and we have thick glasses... I'm scared shitless of washing thin glasses - either I break them while placing them down... or what happened to you... breaking them while washing the insides.
I put my hands inside the drinking glasses since they're thicker than normal at my house (like, half a centimeter compared to the quarter that many are). They're thin at my Oma's house, which leads to them spontaneously busting in the lava-hot dishwater and me being more cautious. A special scrubber isn't needed if you just put the soapy dishrag on a stick (like one of your wooden cooking spoons) and scrub it out that way.
The only peculiar thing I do when washing dishes though is my order of glasses-plates-utensils-pans instead of everything off the table at once. That way the glasses won't get greasy.
My advice, get either thicker drinking glasses if you can or buy canning jars. A set of canning jars are usually much more durable than regular glasses since they were designed with freezing in mind. We use a lot of old Welches' jelly jars as drinking glasses (thinner, but depict things like Pokemon and scenes from Lion King II), as well as some canning jars from the last time my mom made preserves a few years ago. Best part is about them is you can get them used at a flea market or resale shop no problem, if you have the issue of being tight on cash.

I'd say, find thicker glasses? :)

I usually stuff my dishrag inside and kind of turn it around~ My hand may or may not touch the glass.

I just stuff a soapy sponge or wash rag into the glass and then twist the glass around it to scrub the inside.

I assume this precludes the non-existence of a dishwasher, correct?
Because then you should just get a special scrubber for the inside of glasses like that.
