Pokemon can be rather dark =/ originally it was supposed to follow darker story line and appeal to an older teenage audience. The starters were even different to begin with. Originally it was Clefairy and Gastly.
You have a point though, it is a bit sad once you really dig into it. I just wanted something creepy for halloween and I thought this was the best way to do so.
I read this countdown of other creepy/morbid Pokemon. Cubone, naturally, was listed. Paras was too.
As for the Delibird thing, if you think about it, Pokemon is all about taking creatures from their natural habitat and forcing them to fight each other. Then there's the whole fainting thing. Does a wild, fainted Pokemon recover without a Pokemon Center? It's a pretty sad game once you think too much about it.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!

I've known about Yamask's little secret for some time now. I first found out about this Pokemon from an anime episode I was watching one morning while still half asleep. It was an interesting Pokemon, so I looked it up on the internet soon after the episode. I was wide awake after I read those Pokedex entries. It kind of stayed with me for most of that morning. Later I wrote a Pokemon fanfic with a character who could understand the Yamask she had captured sometime before the story and nicknamed it with the name it had when it was still alive.
Anyway, I never really thought about the entries for Spoink and Delibird before. Those are some pretty morbid thoughts.

@SmallxLady:
If you're really interested, it's on Fan Fiction.Net. The title is Dawn of Shadows.
The greatest fear is that of the unknown.
