From what I got its as long as they provide a link to the source and say that the artist of the original peace gave permission then its okay as its within Copyright laws. Its really sketchy and they're also allowing copying and tracing. Not just copying and tracing of a painting, a cartoon or an anime but free lance artists' artworks and artists who draw fan art for fun.
I saw several people making copies and tracing from someone's fan art. And I'm sure they didn't get that artists permission to trace their work.
I understand that tracing and copying is a way to study and practice art. They do that in art school but its just classic artwork like the Mona Lisa or something. Its really weird when someone copies/trace someone's fan art. Like make your own fan art???
After rereading the article the admins of dA are trying to sort out the problem but want people stop associating people reposting artwork as "art theft" but "copyright infringement".
I don't know. There's still a lot cases of people's artwork being stolen or their fanart or original artwork being copied and traced and their not getting help from the admins.
Wow that whole article/journal entry just completely contradicted itself. I now have a massive headache from reading that complete and utter (excuse my "French") Bullshit. I mean what the hell? What the actual hell? So if somebody reposted my artwork from say here from theO on their dA account it isn't "art theft". I'm sorry to say it is.
They just completely and utterly ridiculed and defaced their whole user base basically saying "Art theft is ok. We don't give a rat's arse about it!" Wow, just wow. I'm sorry I am just completely flummoxed by the stupidity of whoever wrote that line of bull. I read several of the comments on that post too. They seemed pretty upset (not that I blame them) about it. I'm honestly glad to say that I will NEVER post art on dA. Not if that's the attitude the admins take to stolen works.
Sorry for the rant. Reading that article made me mad. With your permission may I post the link to that absurd article in my world? I feel it should be addressed further.
I read your edited post, and while I get the whole "copyright infringement" thing, I still think DA is talking out of both sides of their mouths. I read a horror story about an artists work being traced without permission, but the staff person they complained to wouldn't take it down because it wasn't the same character, or some nonsense like that.
Yeah, that's just one of the reasons I don't post art there anymore.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
It's alright dear when I saw it I literally had to walk away from my computer I was so flustered about it. Then I went back and reread it and I think I got what DA actually meant about it.
It's okay. I think it's still totally lame anyway- folks are probably report the lights out of all the "stolen" art just as they've always been. Whether or not the moderators will do anything about is a question though.
Its not that they're allowing people taking people's art work. They're saying stealing digital artwork is copyright infringement not "art theft". If its a physical artwork is stolen its theft.
So...They are against people who copy or steal members' artworks. And they're allowing tracing of members' artworks as long as artist gave their permission.
I got confused about it and now I'm embarrassed I made a mistake about it

I feel conflicted. I read the entire post and didn't see this underlying message at first.
._.
But, now I see what 99.999% of the dA population see and I am conflicted...
I've had my dA for so long and held out through all of their junk. I barely have 14,000 page views and I've been there for 7 years. (Heck, that right there is enough to persuade me to love my tumblr account a lot more...)
I guess I could reserve dA for all the requests folks throw at me and canvas for paid work!
Hahahaha!

Looking back it says that its not art theft its copyright infringement. So what they're saying is their trying to protect the members art work but they don't want it called "Art theft." They're still allowing tracing and copying though as long as the original artist allowed it.

Better safe then sorry. By the looks of it a lot of artists on dA are doing the same.
Oh hey I never followed you back. So...hi! :D
