Wow! That is sooooo true! Renji cannot get stronger, and everyone's gaining new powers all the time =P Yes, his Bankai kicks a**, but against big opponents like Captains and Espada, he really does suck! Poor dude. He won't win Rukia just for swinging a sword about ^^U I like the guy in general, he's got a good sense of humour, delivers comedy in Urahara's place, but in battle, he loses all that flair ^^U End result, he's slowly turning into a comic relief character o.o Poor dude ^^U
i love this essay you wrote. it's like you put into words all the things you just couldn't put your finger on. still...u gotta give him some credit for standing up and actually resisting for some time with opponents that are not exactly matched for him. i think that's what makes him cute

Hm, it reminds me of a conversation I recently had with a freind: "Would you rather be with Ichigo or Renji?" we both said Ichigo but then said, "If only he didn't belong to Rukia," so we will go after Renji He has a large fan base because he is undoubtably going to end up singale in the end, and you might also want to add that Renji only has one level of Bankai, for example: Rukia has four "dances" or, stages, of her swords abilities, wich many charectors don't have, or Byakuya, who has I do beleive three, -AsagiTaichou visit my site for a good fanfic
"It’s a character flaw that brings him back down to Earth (or as close to Earth as you can be as a dead ghostbuster) and makes him more relatable."
Hahahahaha! Seriousness with bright, notable splashes of humor!! Very well written essay! I have a complicated love/hate issue about Renji. He seemed like a jerk in the beginning, but seeing the way his character mellowed out and came to terms with himself (acting superior instead of proving it), was a very satisfying transitions. You point it out cleanly and organized your argument superbly. Kudos for something that I'll read over and over!
What Renji can do to improve is slowly but surely become more skilled with the one thing he has: a massive and unwieldy bankai. Byakuya conceded that centuries would need to pass, but one day Renji could be quite formidable.
We the audience can relate that few things we pursue in life result in massive improvements over short time periods. We have to dedicate ourselves fully to something and gradually our advancement will be made manifest. Renji's determination to do this is something we all can admire, especially because he doesn't see immediate results for his labor and yet he persists.
I really enjoyed this and now I have someone else's insight on why Renji continues to be the character in whom I have the most vested interest.

This reminds me of stuff like how in the Star Wars movies, Princess Leia never misses a shot. Just one of those things where when you notice it, you stop and think and go "hey, what the heck?"
This was a great read and I think you nailed your point perfectly. I think the best part about this is that even though Renji evidently never wins, we the audience always kinda give him a little breadth, like "oh damn, Renji's here, there's gonna be some buttkicking soon!" even though we've never had evidence to the fact. So yeah, spot on and I've no problems with your actual argument.
Writing-wise . . . you hammer on the "is" verbs a lot. It's not wrong, but gets kinda repetitive and a little bland after a while. This one's not hard to fix, though, so I'm not too worried about ya.

I love how Renji is slightly normal in a series of Mary and Gary Sues.
