Well, Xion(or Experiment No. i) was important since she holds some of Sora's memories. Without those, Sora wouldn't be complete. Same goes to Roxas.
In RE:coded, they are data because they are fighting within the contents of Jiminy Cricket's Journal.
Birth by Sleep takes place years ago, before the timeline of Kingdom Hearts 1. So, if you are arranging the games chronologically, Birth by Sleep is the first story.
Terra, Ven, and Aqua are the first keyblade masters.(you also would see King Mickey still training to be a keyblade master and know the pasts of Saix, Axel, Vexen, Xigbar, Laxaeus, Zexion and Ansem why he became the villain)
I also admit, I bought 358/2 days to play Saix. XDDDD
