Don't worry about it!
Hahaha Yes I did. I've been thinking of posting parts of it here since I did alot of research on the subject, but I dunno if I'll get around to reformatting for better reading on the internet. (I wrote my essay while getting my minor in Japanese history and culture. Don't know if that makes it cool, super geeky or both lol)
See to me the art is no longer the difference, since through the internet and the general popularity of manga more westeners are using the style. And frankly some manga looks very much like an American comic book. So my thesis for the essay was how cultural differences effect the shape the comic is delivered, be it in the panels or the actual method of distribution. (Like magazines or books or single issues)
(Assuming you haven't read it already...) If you're interested in a great book about how comics have developed over the years check out Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. I used it as one of my sources for my essay. He's an American comic book artist who's famous for his use of the Japanese style. (with his panels not art) His book can be a heavy read at times but its super interesting! Plus its a comic book about comic books! Pretty much every library has a copy of this book so its easy to get ahold of.
And if thats not enough I don't mind sharing my essay either. ^-^
Sorry you got me ranting on one of the subjects that I can talk about forever! (this manga and vampires...)

Hi tsu!
Sorry for the late reply. I've been swamp with a bunch of readings that I have to do for school :/
Wha!!?? You wrote a paper about that!? That is so cool because in my senior year of high school I wrote a paper about the differences and similarities between American comics and Japanese graphic novels. My focus was more broad than yours, mostly about the details in the drawings, the transition between the panels and the genres.
XD lol Yeah I read so many comics and manga I forget how difficult it can be to tell whos saying what.... Especially with her inner voice. It get easier as the series goes on because I believe they use a different font and it happens a bit less.
It is a bit different than other shoujo. I'm not the biggest fan of shoujo series so when I really like one its usually got some kind of edge to it that makes me keep reading. (My favorite genre is usually a more mature action/drama or supernatural)
~Tsu
PS. Actually thats one of the biggest differences between manga and American comic books. The speech bubbles in American comics generally have longer tails.
^ Excuse my above geekness! ^^;; I wrote a paper about manga versus American comics looking only at speech bubbles and panel arrangement and even since then... Its been hard not to notice. XD
I was able to read a few chapters of it last nite and so far I like the drawing style and the story line. The only thing that I have to get use to is to know which text is her thoughts and which is said out loud. Also most of the time I'm not sure who said what. I might have to start it over again to learn the difference. But yeah so far so good ^^ It's different from other shojo that I had read. I just realized that it is the first shojo that I read since May!
Oh yeah the main character reminds me a lot of Ayuzawa Misaki from Kaichou wa Maid-sama! :D
