I haven't read the manga actually. At the time I read the novel I was under the 18 years required to purchase the manga and my mom was NOT gonna go for buying it for me… So I read it in novel form. XD And I've never picked up the manga because I don't feel like, using manga format, that it would… be as brutal as the novel…
Of course thats a matter of opinion.
Hunger Games is a very different kind of book than BR. Thats why I think its funny that a lot of people immediately point to rip off. Heck Battle Royal wasn't even the first book to do the whole teens fighting each other to the death thing! (And there's been movies like that before too!)
Battle Royal was genuinely a difficult read for me, it took me 3-4 months to read the book because I had to take a break for my sanity. Of course I was younger then, and hadn't really ever read anything like it, but even though I've read a lot of violent books since, none of them have mentally impacted me like BR.
So when you go to read it, I'd be curious to see how you feel about it… ^-^

(Oh and its not just psychological, trust it is goooory)
I have the Battle Royale novel but I havent read it yet, its the enxt book on my list after I finish my current one! I first read the manga a few years ago AND ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. The move was pretty good too ^_^
As for Hunger Games Ive only seen the movie (which wasn't my thing, all the killing was off screen dammit!) My bf has read the books for both HG and BR and prefers BR, and oh man I cant wait I just love me some psychological horror! :D
