Y'know, ancient tribe used it in dark hexing rituals, the magic was too powerful, and it animated the mask...so they buried it deep in "hell" to keep it from the clutches of normal idiotic people. And then centuries later some normal idiotic people decided "Hey, let's fight the goddesses cuz they suck!", built a tower to the heavens, goddesses flipped it over, they ended up in "hell", and then pow! Normal idiotic people get a hold of Majora's Mask.

It's more disturbing when you explain it with a bit more detail...And when you see the different animated forms of Majora (the mask has tentacles....)
