I really couldn't care less whether people would think I'm crazy for shopping for manga or not. I like to go crazy over something anime related with my best anime-addicted friend, and then receive many weird stares also due to the fact that we're pretty much goth or alternative (or whatever you want to label it). I like having a passion and going for it 100%. I went to the biggest of the three anime conventions we have anually in Holland in the beginning of May, and I love the way cosplayers and going-haywire anime fans walk around the city and behave like they're clinically insane *remembers when she sat behind Itachi in McDonalds* ....ah yes, good times ..
Heck, whenever my mom mentions that I love to draw and that I usually draw anime, most of my family replied with, "Oh, that hentai-thing, right?". So the majority of people my mom knows thinks I draw porn. I lol'd.

hey you live in Holland? so do I^^ yeah I know, manga / anime's not that popular0.o' though I do have a couple of friends (who are on here as well^^) who do like it, and they infected me with the virus:P lol
I have no idea whether it would take the fun out of it if it would become really popular...*thinks hard* no I'm sorry, I really don't know...:3
Hmm, that's good question, I live up in Alaska, so we're kinda in the same latitude area if you think about it, this post just showed up, what time is there incidentally.
Back you you're question, I think that it's a pretty even 50/50 split. I am one of the few manga and anime lovers in my town that don't dress like absolute fashion disasters, (I mean this is BAD) or slice themselves to ribbons (serisouly). I know more about anime than most kids I know. I actually look up the new stuff and try to watch the first episode of most animes to say I've seen it. A lot of kids I know watch the 33 episode of Death Note on Cable and say that they're total Hardcore Otaaku's and then go get their moms to buy teh manga's for them. That really gets my goat. It's kind of fun to explain things about anime to people as long as their willing to listen. I dunno if it's better or not. I kind of like being the smart one of all my friends about anime. But I would also like not to be stared at when I draw anime or read a manga, frankly I hate shopping for manga because of the stares I get. But sadly, all the anime and manga merchandise in my town is located in a store called Hot Topic, my parents hate that store, so obviously won't let me in...T.T. So that means all the gothic weirdoes by it and then go around advertising that if you're an anime fan then you're a pothead as well.
So, in answer to your question, I really can't answer becuase I'm torn both ways-sorry!
Hope I didn't scare you away with this really long post!
