Yeah... I hope it doesn't have to come to that for me. I mean, I could go download all my videos again and re-rip my CD collection, but that would be such a tedious process. -3-
Ugh this Happened to me just a few weeks ago.. I just said screw it and reinstalled it and had to find and re-get my 50gb of Doctor Who of the 4th Doctor, all 100gb of MST and 300gb of other assorted anime. It was not fun. I went crazy for a couple days.

Aieeeee!!!!! I hope you get it straightened out! I'm trying to figure out what to do to back up my iTunes library. It's currently on a backup/external drive, but I'd like to back it up even further.

._. I'm glad you were able to go to Geek Squad... But I'm sorry they couldn't help. At least you didn't invalidate the warranty last night, hai? ._. *nuzzles lots*
Yeah, whenever I'm trying to figure out some of the specifics of some hardware/software I've just got, I go to the manufacturer's website. They usually have PDFs that I download and flip through. But I take it that in your case it'll take more than reading a PDF file. Still, they have to have a solution at hand, some sort of driver-update or download.
I think it's more likely that it's just the software, because I tried hooking it up to other computers and they couldn't detect the software either. And for a while, it's been disconnecting and then rebooting itself. I'd say the software's just been fried over time. Hope that's really what it is, in that case it would at least mean all my data isn't lost.
Ah, so it's connected via USB, right? Strange, because when I unhooked two USB drives (USB drive and MP3 player) from my computer when I had to remove my extra internal hard-drive, they both showed up as new drives when I reconnected them; the computer detected them on start-up like I had just installed them, even though I've been using them for a while now.
Yeah, I think it's your software for the drive that's doing it, and maybe some other internal configurations with the computer. Do you have an internal drive as well as an external? Maybe the internal drive, if you have one, has something to do with it.
Yeah, it is external. I think the software may be corroded, which is why the computer can't detect it. I know this thing didn't come with a separate disc.
It's no fun when something goes wrong with a 500 GB harddrive. I recently installed one on my computer, but everything went smoothly. Is yours a standalone (external) drive? If so, I don't know much about those drives. Still, I tend to think that all technological problems do have solutions, even if the solution involves a massive overhaul. Let's hope it doesn't come to that! Good luck with it.
I tried looking, but I'll try again following your instructions. I'm pretty sure this thing has built-in software, and it's probably been messed up somehow. If I can't get it running myself I'll take it to Geek Squad.
If it's treating it as new hardware and requests the drivers/software, look it up on google. Just type whatever the product is, followed by 'software (or driver, whichever) download'. Usually, the software is free, so you won't have to do anything illegal to get it. I lose software and drivers all the time, and this always gets the job done for me.

It's the hard drive and not the computer, because I tried to plug it in to my laptop and the family computer too. I'm going to call Geek Squad this weekend and see what they might be able to do.

Yeah, I doubt this is covered in a manual. I hope all it takes is a software update. *crosses fingers*
