I know I could cut the number down a little, it's just that fifty would certainly be more of a challenge for me than twenty-five or thirty. (Though a book a week is a little much for me at the moment. Once I get my world post properly organized, I might cut the number down a little.)
Oh, I wasn't planning on the majority being manga. (I read a lot less manga than I do typical novels.) I just happened to start a manga the day before I saw this post - so I thought I'd ask if I could include it.
Yeah, I'm kinda a classic chick lit person; actually took a class on it for my major in college. Along with Tolkein and Fantasy as my major authors credit.
Ooh, sounds fun. Although thirty books would be entirely more feasible for me, it's called a challenge. Right? Besides, I remember fondly the days when I could read more than one book in a week. (Really love the idea, maybe it will get me back to reading like I want to.) So, challenge accepted, TimeChaser.
One question, though. Does manga count? (I only ask this because I'm right in the middle of one now.)

This sounds fun. I saw the day you posted this but that day was a quick in and out for me. Just checking PM's. I saw Nana's post and stop by to read hers then came by here. Think I will hop on board this train.
She wrote mainly historical and mysteries, and combined the two genres in her Brother Cadfael Chronicles, which is what I'm reading.
The series takes place from around 1135 to 1145 during a real civil war in England called "The Anarchy" when King Stephen and his cousin Maud clashed over the throne. Its set in the real town of Shrewsbury and its abbey. The main character, Cadfael, is a Benedictine monk who spent 40 years in the world first as a soldier in the Crusades and other adventurous occupations before he chose to retire to monastic life. As such he has an intuitive understanding of human nature and often ends up helping his friend deputy sheriff (later sheriff) Hugh Beringar in solving baffling murder cases.
Its a very interesting series, combining the real history of medieval England, whodunnit, and also a healthy dollop of medieval romance (there's almost always a star-crossed couple Cadfael also has to help along the way).
They adapted 13 of the 21 books into a TV series in the '90s starring Sir Derek Jacobi as Cadfael. Most of the episodes are good, although on occasion they took liberties with characters and plots to better fit television, though the very last episode aired was so distorted it barely resembled the original novel.
Sadly, the series is currently out of print, I believe. Its been years since I've seen major book stores carrying it, and online the individual books are fetching prices about 2-3 times their original cost. And they have yet to publish them in e-book format. But if you're interested in giving em a try you can look around to see if you have better luck finding any. I recommend them. :)
Anyway, here's a link for you that can tell you more: Cadfael.
This sounds like fun! ^^ I think 50 is a reasonable amount, I haven't been consistently reading in ages so I think I'll try this out :3 Good luck to you, my friend~~
I think this sounds like a good idea! I don't know if I'll manage 50 though... But I set myself the challenge to read as much as I can! Aha. I'll keep a record too. Yus.
Reading print books is nice, but I do agree that electronic reading has many advantages, especially in your situation with terribly limited selection. Its fun to be able to carry your own personal library around wherever you go and have it fit in your hands all the time. :)
I used to read a lot more but since I moved to this little town I hardly read anymore. Back in Utah I went to the Library on a regular basis. I tried that here but the library is super tiny and hardly carries any of the type of books I'm interested in.
I looked into the library loan program but you have to pay for the book to be shipped to here and back from whatever library it comes from. At that point I decided it was better hold off and simply save the money for a Kindle instead.
It's kind of sad but the digital library amazon offers with the prime membership easily holds more than 4 times what the tiny library here does. Plus, if I have to pay for shipping both ways to loan something, I'd rather buy it instead, seriously. ^^
Anyway, it should be a lot of fun. I'll have to keep track to see just how many books I do end up reading this year. :p
Yeah, I think I might go to Adam about it. Maybe he could officially post the challenge if he agreed it was a good idea. Make a post on the front page and in his own world. I enjoy reading and think its always a good idea to encourage others to read more.
I posted my personal challenge, I put my goal at 25 :)
Oh, I see... Well yes, it would be cool if this could be made into some kind of official challenge somehow!:) It would be nice to see how many people would participate...^^
I'm doing this mainly as a way to engage people again, since I have been largely inactive on the site in the last year. If there were a way to issue this as an official challenge, I would have done it, but it doesn't relate to any of the art hubs the site focuses on.
I've always tended to read slowly too. Although I'm in a phase right now where I'm reading more actual print books again, I've found with the Kindle I had and now my NOOK that I read much faster that way.
You could always lower the challenge goal to suit your own abilities. Say 25 instead of 50. :)

I would love to accept the challenge, but I'm quite sure I won't be able to read a total of 50 different books this year XD I simply won't have the time for it... Plus just about every book I read has 500+ pages :') Anyway, I wish you good luck in achieving your goal!;)
If this were any kind of texts in general, I could manage it. But books?! I do read plenty, but I read slowly. In fact, considering what I do read, I had better take my time and let them sink in. Often, when I do finish a book, I reread it sometime later to see what I might have missed the first time.
Oh of course it wouldn't. I just know that if I did this there would be some that are re-reads.
Anyway, I find the idea of doing this fun since I just got my Kindle Fire the other day. The only thing I'm waiting on is for my wireless router to show up so I can get connected with it. So I plan on reading quite a bit this year.
What's your take on rereading previous books and counting them as well? For example, you might want to read something you haven't read in ages or because a sequel is coming out so you want a refresher.
