As a former card-carrying member of the Official Doctor Who Fanclub, I am outraged. I'm also aware that this sort of thing happens, leaving the world a little more empty. *sigh*

Apparently this happens to a lot of TV shows (and especially anime) in Japan too. They just tape over them and reused the tapes. >.> I guess that's what they mean by the economic side of this. ._.
Those were the days before VHS tapes. After a first broadcast, a repeat, and overseas broadcast sales, they didn't think there was any market for them anymore. So due to this shortsightedness, rather than store them someplace else, they just burned them. And they did that to many other programs as well.
The thing I don't get is that it says they only removed for economic and space saving reasons. I'm sure there could have been other places to store them. They could have sent them to my mom. *laughs* Shoot they didn't have to destroy them.
