That sounds a little crackpot-like to me. Don't know if I could even stand to sit through it, depending on how stupid or infuriating it was.
I guess it's interesting... I dunno, I just don't like it when people do this major thing of, "OOH, let's hypothesize what would have happened to the past if this-or-that event never happened/happened differently!"
Yeah, it was probably more for the shock value than truly what might happen, although the worst case scenario has happened before in real history (the Inquisition, Nazi Germany).
They were portraying America as politccally and socially stunted, stuck in a combination of the 1800s and 1950s. I think the only way the Confederacy stayed powerful was due to the fact they had conquered all of Central and South America.
If you want more accurate alternate histories where the South won the war, read some of Harry Turtledove's books.
As interesting as alternate history is, the biggest issue for me is that no one can really speak of it with authority (which is not to say that there aren't similar issues with actual history). On a personal level, though, I do like fantasy/sci-fi that's clearly based on an real historical time & place.
They forgot the part where pockets of the North would have Union flags on the windows of every house and signs that read, "The North will rise again." :P

Though in all seriousness, I think I agree with Allamorph. It seems as if they were trying to depict the worst aspects of the worst possible outcome rather than a more realistic portrayal of what this alternate universe might be like. For example, if the American economy always relied on plantations as the primary source of profit, then there's no way that America would have become the world power that it is today. Not to say that Confederate America would never have found a way to translate slavery into more advanced industries, but I find it rather negligent if they really did skim over everything between the main years of Reconstruction and World War II.
I think I would still be interested in seeing it though, in spite of all that. ^^;;
What's idiotic is that the program apparently spent way too much focus on the "slavery" side of things.
Slavery wasn't the only reason the South seceded, though it was the catalyst. Plus, I fully doubt the feasibility of a "Confederate Empire", as well as the extreme degree to which religious and racial intolerance was portrayed. The Southerners weren't bigots. And the North wasn't a host of angels.
Not that I'm saying the Union shouldn't have won. Slavery's too easily abused, and the racism needed to be quashed (even though the Union did a terrible job enforcing equality).
I just hate when stuff gets overinflated like that.

I saw something like that in high school. It was about if the Aborigines were the ones who came later to Australia. And they steal the white people's children and the land. Instead of industrialising the country, the get rid of all the concrete and plant trees. It was quite interesting. ^^ I wish I remember more about the show though...

Stuff like that is fun. If you want to wrap your brain around another story along those lines... pick up The Freedom Factor by Gerald N. Lund. It's a deal of someone being briefly transfered to a USA where the Constitution was not ratified. A fun and yet startling read, much like what you just described. Heh.

Still, certainly... interesting.

I best Buy. I spent way too much there Friday on Zeta Gundam and Zebraman.
I've heard of that documentary before and had been wanting to see it. It sounds like it would be interesting.

...Canada, which was now the way we would think of the USA: multiculturally diverse and supporting freedom for all people
Then what do you think of Canada now?
On that note, don't forget that the US uses the "melting pot" idea. I much prefer our "mosaic".
I'd rather see in shades of gray.

The Best Buy anime sale kinda freaked me out. WOOOT, you finally got the last volume of Kurau.
After reading about the alternative Civil War era, I am glad none of that happened. I am kind of interested in seeing it as a piece of fiction.
I beat up trees. >_>
