True. It does seem a little more like they're worshiping the fame rather than God. But the documentary just gave the worldview that Christians are uneducated, close-minded people. Heck, I know some people like that. I don't know how many times I've been preached at by people I know because I listen to secular music and read fiction. It's not a problem if I know it's NOT REAL. But, some people take it way too far, to the point where it's this holier-than-thou attitude that makes people sound idiotic. I totally agree, I wonder if their hearts were in the right place.
I am extremely discriminating of anything shown on television. Hell, I don't even watch shows that showcase rabid Evolutionists because I know not all of them are totally unreasonable. Not even most of them. Most likely not even half of them.
Anything involving Christianity contains commentary--open or oblique, spoken or unspoken--about faith. It can be subtly good or subtly bad, or openly, etc., but it's inherent and cannot be separated. (Which is simultaneously unfortunate and rather convenient, depending.) So my immediate reaction is to completely ignore anything aside from the individual information and work it back into the bigger picture later.
About the only thing I pull out of any show at all is hard information. I don't care about spin because I can do that myself, and I can't trust any media source to be honest and fair to any side. (I'm sure you know this as well.) Sure it might sound bitter for me to speak like this, but then you know how unreasonably serious I can become sometimes. =P
The documentary does put a negative spin on it by choosing not to showcase the side of the Christian community who actually understands the fictional concept. But that doesn't change the beliefs of these people.
Same reason Winston-Salem was so bad. If you don't like something enough, you find a reason to hate it. "Demonic" on the Christian side, "close-minded" on the opposite.
Also makes me question the validity of their salvation in the first place.
"Warlocks are enemies of God! If it were in the Old Testament, Harry Potter would be put to death!"
This is actually true, by Jewish law. Saul (first king of Israel), consulted with a witch to determine the outcome of a particular battle, and when she found out who she was she was immediately afraid for her life simply because she knew of Jewish policy. (Under harsh duress, she also told him he would die. Which he did.)
Then there's something I'm not sure these people have heard of. Not been around all that long, really; only a few dozen centuries at most. Goes by the name of FICTION.
You'd think with all the crap we take about our main resource being fiction, we'd be a little more open to other people having fiction of their own.
I wonder if any of them have theological issues with the X-Men.
I don't care about Harry Potter either. ^^ But that lady's words were just waaaaaay over the top unnecessary and frankly frightening, as was then enthusiastic reaction of the congregation.
I don't think the film producers had to put any spin on it. Sadly, there are genuinely people out there who are so scarily fundamentalist as the film shows. Now, I'm an intelligent person and I know that not everyone of a faith is exactly like that, but I am concerned about people like those profiled in the film.
I actually watched Jesus Camp, and as a Christian, it kind of frightened me. I think the documentary producers really put a negative spin on it and only showed the parts that would make Christians seem like idiots. But I have to agree with you, people who condemn fictional characters are a little over-the-top. It's FICTIONAL! They're not real, people!
Unfortunately, there are people in every walk of life who find it too inconvenient to think for themselves. >.> That's when stuff like "Jesus Camp" happens.
I also like that these Harry Potter haters always manage to forget that the Lord of the Rings they love so much (and hail as an allegory, when really Tolkien hated allegory) also features magic and wizards...
I think that Jesus Camp thing sounds... Interesting, but I know that i'd end up getting irritated by the anti-Harry mob. Pfft, I don't like Harry Potter anyway, but I think people should realise that it is fiction and stop getting so worked up.
Well, this is the entire first half of one season, so all the discs are together in one box. I just have an issue with the style of box Bandai uses to release it's collections in.

Yeah... The uber-fanatical people scare me. I have no problem letting someone believe what they want; my problem is when those scary people want to run the world according to just their beliefs. ._. I'm perfectly fine the way I am, so leave me to live my life the way I want. *nods*
My dad also isn't a fan of the Old Testament either.
I had to scale it a bit to fit and not look fuzzy, but I'm glad I found that wallpaper. ^^ I'm going to keep it from now through Sci-Fi's airing of Season 2.

I totally lost my train of thought again. I guess I shouldn't try to comment while watching interesting things on TV, eh?
I know what you mean about the people in that "Jesus Camp" show. I may be a preacher's kid, but that's just scary.
Beans are evil. Bad, bad beans.

Well the focus of the film was just this group and their camp. It wasn't a general film about faith.
