I am a Mac user. :D I'm not a hater either! Growing up I've always switched between Macs and PCs so I'm pretty familiar with both! ^-^ I even still use an old PC from time to time!
Yes Windows movie maker (and iMovie too) are both very basic and limited, as they are linear editing. Meaning you have to edit in order you can't just put down a scene 3:42 in to the amv you have to edit in order up to the point. Also I think you can only do one layer of sound and picture. Sadly if you want better software that has more powerful editing capabilities you'll have to shell out some cash. But you don't need to buy professional editing software by any means! I've seen people do amazing things with Sony Vegas (a PC editing software) but it still runs close to $30. Of course there are ways to acquire this software free… but that path is not for everyone.
I've learned all kinds of tricks in the programs I use so finding clips isn't too bad. Usually before I start editing I go through and mark the clips I know I'll definitely want to use so they'll be easy to find. Before I had a program I could use marks in I used to keep all episode synopses with in grabbing distances I could remember where things were. But I don't always do that, sometimes I just go for it and edit.
I take it you're a Mac user. I'm a Windows user. Don't worry; I'm not a hater.
I played around with Windows Movie Maker once. Since I was working on a slide show, I wasn't using video. That was pretty easy to do, but I assume that video is harder. I was a bit disappointed when it came to adding music to the movie, though. There was no way to edit sound.
Is it ever a daunting task for you to look through all the episodes just to find the right clip?
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
Haha thanks! Its ok if you don't have any requests!
Ok I'm going to try to answer your question in as much detail as I can!
Over the years I've used several different programs to make amvs. For this one I did use a fancier program (Final Cut Pro 7) However I did not use any special features in the program. What that means is that the editing was all about good timing, so I could have made it in any program. I don't know what kind of computer you're using, but todays computers usually come with a basic video editing program. (iMovie for Macs, and I think its still called Windows Movie Maker on PCs) I started out using these and its not a bad place to start.
Time… Well that depends… I usually take forever making amvs (mostly because I start and stop editing) This one only took me a couple hours. Usually I estimate an amv takes about 1 hour per minute of video. So a 4 minute song will be closer to 4 hours, a one minute song 1 hour. But that depends on the kind of video being edited.
There are places where you can download anime, but the footage isn't always the best. So I rip DVDs on my computer and then transfer the files into a format I can edit. If you want more details on how to do that I can definitely help you find the right programs for your computer.
In regards to your AMV, I WANNA SEE MORE!!!!! What software do you use? How much time does it take? How do you get the video clips? I think you can tell that I really want to make one myself.
I know you're taking requests, but I can't think of any offhand. Sorry about that.
