Exactly, that they made the injuries more realistic… yikes.
Digimon and Monster Rancher could get away with that because 1) the mons aren’t being forced to fight (yes, Pokémon stresses the partnership aspect too; but let’s face it, the fights are for “sport”) and 2) because the kids were in just as much danger as they were.

The so called animal fighting element has always been a grey area for Pokemon, I think that's why they go with the aesthetic of not quite fully being the animal they are based on, you aren't going to see yellow mice running around shooting electricity any time soon, I think it's also why Pokemon are made to be resilient enough to just faint, Sho has one foot over the line as he never hesitates to try the point blank hyper beam more than once, begs the question how many people he battled up to Ash and how many of those went through the same ordeal Pikachu did.

If the Lt. Surge match made me cry, this one would have wrecked me. I’m surprised the ASPCA didn’t jump on this one since they slammed Pokémon for animal cruelty when it had its initial wave of popularity in the States.
