Not gonna be funny? Damn...Well, I've seen MNS's other work, and there are jokes occasionally thrown in, so I'm sure there will be some funny bits. Just not nearly as many as the show. I mean, saving the world is SRS BSNS, dood.
I remember Eragon staying rather true to the book. Nonetheless it was a BAD movie. I don't need every detail, I don't mind changes made to the plot to make the movie more streamline, I do mind when they take good material and make it crappy.
Avatar is good material and a big part of its appeal is the humor. There's two sides to the Avatar coin and yes there is a butt load of drama but there's also a butt load of comedy. By taking out one of the factors that made it so good makes me worry that the film will be bad.
And I never said they don't owe the fans anything. They do owe us, they owe us a good movie. And they just don't owe it to the fans, they owe it to anybody who buys a ticket, to the studio, to the producers, to the people who work on the film in general. Being a fan doesn't give you special privileges. Nobody cares that I watched the first episode of Avatar the first time it was on TV and that I cried during the finale. That doesn't give me the right to condemn something before its hit the theaters. Being a person who watches more movies than is healthy, watches a movies with a critical eye, and wastes time on the internet researching about movies before they come out gives me the privilege to hint that a movie might be crappy.
People can always nitpick. I try not to do that. I've sat through the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Percy Jackson, Twilight, and yes Eragon movies. There's a shitload of changes made to those movies but, for the most part, I enjoyed them. I liked most of those movies because they kept true to the source material. Twilight never tries to be anything its not. The direction Avatar is taking isn't just a few left out chapters, its leaving out part of the show's essence. Hence the concern. Not only as a fan but as a person who doesn't want to waste ten bucks on a ticket. Believe me, if I was going into the Avatar movie just as a fan I would've left a long time ago when they cast a bunch of white people.

Ok, an anime-styled American cartoon. Not too much of a difference, as far as movie producers see it, anyway.
And a good movie is subjective, since I'm sure there are plenty of people that don't care if the movie has comedy/wacky hijinks or not. I'd like to hope that people who readapt works to the big screen feel that they owe something to the fans, so that we don't get blasphemous works like Eragon again.

1- Avatar isn't an anime.
2- Anybody who takes an idea from something preexisting doesn't owe me much and I don't expect adaptations to stay 100% true to it's source but they do owe me a good movie.

It's a live action anime. We're you expecting something that would please the fans?
