(*applaudes*) Bravo my friend for writing a review based mostly on objective thinking rather than biased flaming.
For the most part I agree with everything you had to say. To give the movie a little credit though, I thought they did a pretty neat job with chosing background scenery, portraying the Blue Spirit, and ornamenting Aang's tattoos. Outside of that though...yeah...they seriously didn't do the show any lick of justice to it. The two things I was most disappointed with were the lack of development with the characters--both with regards to bonds and personal development--and the so called "final battle." =_=; To me, that was the biggest fail in the movie because it was supposed to be the thing that wrapped up the first season in a nice, neat, epic package.
Oh, and they pronouced Iroh's (EYE-roh) name "Ee-roh" in the movie. (If memory serves correct.)
I remember hearing commercials or something that said Aang's name. I, at first, thought it was a mis-pronunciation on the announcer's part because hey, it's a movie based on a kid's TV show, why should they care?
Then I saw a behind-the-scenes thing on Nicktoons with M. Night and just kept wincing through the whole thing. He changed the pronunciations to make them Asian. He made the Firebenders need a source of ignition 'cause everybody else is limited (IE, Katara). He cut the Kiyoshi Warriors because he couldn't figure out a way out of them. Etc.
Like you said, he can't be picking and choosing, which is what I've heard he did - and even what the interviews, what he himself said. Agh.
Maybe what would've been better is if they had taken the Points A and B of the show (iceberg to North Pole) and then just totally done a new story. Have an adventure, learn some waterbending along the way, have a bit of angst over your dead people, brush against some characters or two. Avoid Zuzu chasin' you, somehow get Zhao in there, and end with giant spirit koi smacking ships like bitches. There.
