I see your point but I still don't think just because you don't notice something that you magically don't become responsible for it. Plenty of parents go to jail or lose custody over not realizing what their children were doing behind their backs. And sure Xehanort was an adult but he was under Ansem's responsibility. Also as soon as your argument turns to "science for science's sake" is when you enter into "mad scientist" area.
But yes... Without Ansem there'd be no Kingdom Hearts 1 or 2... or COM or 358/2 (there'd still be BBS!) so... I really shouldn't complain, should I?
Yeah, "Ansem the Wise" really was a controdiction in motion. In his defense though, his initial purpose behind all of his actions was the pursuit of science. As I see it, he was not the type of individual that was content on leaving things to faith or speculation. Like most fictional scientists that end up getting their due in the end, he was obsessed with obtaining facts, even if doing so required "expending" a few people. I think it's only natural (if not twisted) that he thought of his own apprentices being the root of the problem. Let's not forget that it was Xeanort (I know I'm not spelling that right...) that ultimately threw his world into chaos. Ansem actually did recognize that his experiments on the heart were getting out of hand and that it was better to leave well enough alone.
Not that I liked what he resorted to doing in the end. Of course, without that unrational train of thought from Ansem, we wouldn't have been given KHII as we know and love it. (Sorry if this was a little redundant. I guess what I was trying to say thoughout all of that was I'm rather neutral on how I feel about the wacko scientist who should have taken a hint from Socrates on being labeled "wise.")

@Waffuru:
Nah, you've got every right to. Especially since you bring up a good point. (*winces at evening news*)
