hehehe... good ol' mathematics to make things look a little more mysterious... except when you're a mathematician, then it's plain ol' boring and simple to you.

These little math tricks are always fun. The reason it works for any phone number, though, is 'cause you're entering the entire number in steps 2 and 6. The rest of the steps are either to get the digits in the right places or extraneous to make it appear more complex than it is. When you simplify it, it becomes pretty obvious how it works.
1. Grab a calculator. (you won't be able to do this one in your
head) You will now.
2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area
code) 3. Multiply by 80 Multiply by 40 instead to cancel step 9 4. Add 1 Cancels with step 8, since 1 x 250 - 250 = 0
5. Multiply by 250
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number 7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again. Unnecessary because we're no longer doing step 9 8. Subtract 250 9. Divide number by 2
Tip: Do the 40 x 250 multiplication first, then multiply by the first three digits of your number. And if you can't do those in your head then you need to take more math classes. :p

Heehee... Simple math but I see how it works with all the equations. Talk about people that have too much time on their hands to make up something like this... heehee.
Very cool indeed I enjoyed working it out and see what number it gave me...

On a different note, I challenge anybody to counter the weirdness of my phone number. Sorta. Last four digits? 7666. P:

ZOMG MATH IS MAGIC I HAD NO IDEA.
I hadn't seen this one before, though. I tend to take calculators, turn them upside down and enter .1134. That's my calculator magic.

@Miss Anonymous:
I figure people will have already tried it and gone, "omg wtf how?!" before reading the comments so I don't feel too bad about spoiling it.
And that's why you do the 40 x 250 first. It makes the multiplication with your first three digits easy no matter what they are.

Well gee, thanks for simplifying it for everyone. :P *pokes*
And you know, some of us have complicated first three digits. *extra poke*
