Nintendo hardware can take way more of a beating than that. Given that it was still in the packaging, the kid could've thrown it to the floor as hard as he could and it wouldn't damage anything.
Hahaha, cute kids, spoiled ones though but definitely cute.
Parents did not bought one, because, sadly at the time we really couldn't (brother and I tried saving up but it was really expensive here as most things are).
I did own a Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) and was a very happy girl playing it for the longest time ever, I do believe its a far older system than N64 hehehe (MG came out mid 1988 but we only got it a few years later when it was faaar cheaper though), does that count? =P
A much more recent one but this also reminds me of the first time I bought a PSX which were almost like 4 or more years after it came out, at that time me and brother worked really hard and saved up enough to buy it and it was oh so worth it. I find it so much rewarding when you work really hard to get your things, this how I was taught. =)
I remember that when we brought either of the two mentioned home, we opened the boxes and took the stuff out very carefully and not break anything because of our excitement. XD

Being under ten at the time, I saved up money with my brothers, we sold our NES and SNES, and managed to scrape together enough to get it right around when it came out.
Still, my reaction was very akin to it. It's just I was thanking myself :P

@Desbreko:
Maybe it's made like that so that when kids really do things like this, it won't break and disappoint them? xD
But yeah, I'm sure it could take a lot more than some kids beating on it.

except for me it was the NES. Ahh good times. The worst part is how my mom got immediately addicted to Tetris and wouldn't let my sister and I play.

I'd rather see in shades of gray.

And what would be even more funny is if when they opened the box, it was broken because of how much they shook it around and beat on it. *shot*

When I was eight years old, I had to save up money for an entire year to buy my own N64 and a used copy of Mario Kart 64.

Six-year-olds and nuclear weapons: a combination that just can't be beat.
