You know what I've thought was wrong with today's society? We're so worried about being politically correct that it just stopped making sense anymore...
Everyone's a little bit racist, it's true, but everyone's just about as racist as you.
(That's all I could think of when I saw the first bullet point.)

A: People already are racist. Hate to say it, but it's true. B: People pester you because people are dumb and know that for every every person who can not be swayed there are dozens of others who can be. C: If you're trying to put someone in office, you make money if they get there. Cha-ching.
Politics isn't really the issue here. It's people. If it's not politics, it's something else that they might be giving you grief over. That's why making your own choices and not letting others sway your vote is the best way to stop local political prejudice.
Like SunfallE said, a lot of people don't engage in that kind of silly behavior. The best you can do is stay informed and let people decide for themselves if they'll choose to follow what others say.

Just ignore the nitwits, stick to your principles, and do your best to do your own research into the candidates and where they stand on issues so you aren't influenced by second-hand and possibly unreliable sources.
Ah, you got the guestposting bit. My comment was late.
This is a tough cookie. Politically speaking, it can't be avoided. Some people simply just go extreme.
I'd say choose the one you seem the best and try to influence others to do the same. Just don't go overboard or you might end up doing the same thing as those you are trying to avoid.
It's simple really, you just vote for who you think will do the best job and ignore the idiots who take things to seriously. The thing is, if you get too caught up in it as well trying to stop it, you're not much better than the others, only in a different direction.
Besides, you're forgetting that a good percentage of the population is completely and totally sane. Don't let that percentage that takes things too seriously fool you into thinking everyone is like that. Because you know, we're not. =P
I completely agree with that I try my best to stay out of politics but just as you mentioned there are those who just pester you. I already know who I'm voting for and I don't need to defend myself or explain to others it's my choice. I also hate that racism stuff that pops up with these things and the last one you put there is the biggest: the media. I don't even know where to begin there.
All I can really do is hope for respect, most of the state believes in one thing but for those others that don't necessarily see the same view they get angry at, hey it's their choice but the people here just don't seem to respect. How can you ever hope to get anything done if you don't have respect for your fellow man?
