Conventions and Beyond
It's been a few days since I had just completed an official theOtaku.com meet-up in Seattle. Really, considering we're all otaku, an anime con' is a very, very ideal way to meet your online friends. You're in a public space surrounded by people. If it's an "official" meet, I'll vouch that we work to make such meets safe and fun for everyone involved as best we can. In general, many people go to conventions with friends and such anyway, so they should at least have one or two good, reliable people in the general area at all times.
At our particular meet, I remember one younger girl had (whom I'm assuming was) her mother with her at our site member meet-up - and really, that's not bad at all. I mean, is there really a better way to prove to your parents that your online friends are okay than to just let them see these friends for themselves? It goes back to that whole thing: if you don't feel that you should have to hide your friends from your parents, then don't hide 'em.
Of course, if you do feel that you have to hide your online friends, well... that's a whole other problem, and maybe these aren't the best friends for you after all. Something to think about...
