It's probably coming from fans who are only familiar with the new series. I've been as this for most of my life and I just take it as it comes. David Tennant's outfit was considered geek chic, I guess people think Matt Smith's is more nerdy professor. I think it's a good look for him. ^^

Perhaps in an episode with pirates. XP But even then, the Doctor isn't really known for dressing in-period even when he travels to the past anyway.

It would be funny if they randomly had him wearing that costume for any amount of time during the season, though.
