Yeah, these days people go both ways. I'm not exactly sure what the trend is or whether it's maybe location-based or not . . . but for purposes of your own writing, pretty much just stick to whatever you like and - as always - just stay consistent.
And if you intend to submit to some big-name publishing company, well . . . they can always edit that.
I was about wondering this: I have been seeing in published stories that sometimes speech is put in " marks all the way through. But other times in 'marks all the way through. Is there a reason why both are used and is it best to use one over the other or are they truly interchangeable? I tended to always assume that '' was for quotes and "" for speech, until I started seeing the speech within '' in published books!
