90 percent of the time I write characters around my age -- maybe a bit younger, maybe a bit older. That's just the easiest for me to relate to, I guess. As for gender, most of my stories center around guys, but I'm trying to write more, and better, female characters now. I'm enjoying it a lot, actually; strong female characters are fun to write.
I seem to be best at writing from a male perspective and hardcore-badass females. Girly-girls, however, are out of the question (I can't write from a perspective I don't understand and I don't understand that at all). I think I'm almost too used to young adult/twentysomethings for my writing; though my experimentation with writing from a middle-aged man's POV is going well.
I love writing YA! It's a genre I loved and still love a lot, and there's something that's really fun about younger characters. I'm working on a YA project at the moment, but while I have the characters and the opening situation, I'm still working on the plot.
I'm all about the YA/middle-grade. I can't really imagine myself writing for adults, TBH. Gender doesn't matter, although there are times when I think consciously about trying to appeal to both. I especially like putting female main characters in what otherwise come across as completely male-oriented stories, and vice versa.
But the main reason I write YA is because YA novels were what sparked my love of reading and of stories in any form, before high school English almost crushed it out of me. And there's an incredibly friendly, well-connected, supportive online community of kidslit & YA writers & readers, which certainly doesn't hurt.

I still am a young adult . . . hehe. But yeah, in general I think people in their teens to 20s'll probably enjoy my stuff the most.
I've been wanting to try out real children's lit some time, though. I need kids to write for first, though . . .
