Aw, you are not dumb. *pats your head* :) I mean, the word visual novel comes from that it is mostly in text and you have to read it and make decisions. But visual, because you actually see the pictures and so and hear the music in background.^^
It's not a book, it's visual novel, a game for computer. XD But still you can as well buy the books, light novels of Clannad and read them if you like it! :D (though it is hard to find them... even not translated ones).

.... What?! Ecchi?? LoL, if it is made for guys it doesn't mean that it is ecchi. Besides I know girls who played it and enjoyed in it. You see, anime is made off that visual novel. Yup, not from a manga, because manga and anime came out at the same time based on the visual novel. In that visual novel you can end up with different endings and girls, though main one is Nagisa as well in anime.
But you may remember that there is a bonus episode where he ends up with.. Ah, her name slips me always. Well you know on who I talk about. That's one of extra endings there as well.
You might try it or not, I just say if you are an extra Clannad fan.^^
I want to, but I looked it up and all the pictures I saw from it look nothing like the anime, so it would be kinda confusing. Also that fact that it was made for guys so I have a fear that my beautiful Clannad will be all ecchi. ;__;
Oh yeah, one of my favorite animes that I ever watched as well. It is just so beautiful. Definitely wait a little and when you find the right chance (and person, maybe friend) watch it again. :)
