I think there is a problem with dark matter, energy and flow since they had to come up with new rules to apply to these. I know it's not easy, but they could technically adjust the laws of physics to include these instead of making them work outside of the laws of physics itself.
I mean, the laws of physics were made with proofing from a long while back and technology was lagging behind, so I don't know why they feel it's impossible to update them. We have much better technology and would be able to proof an improved version which could avoid loopholes such as dark matter etc.
Although I say all this, it's a lot harder than it sounds to do so, but they aren't really considering that option, which is a bit of a problem with the scientific community in my idea. I feel we should be able to update laws previously applied to further improve our technology. Since if this works, it doesn't work within the laws of physics itself, so should technically not work. Meaning the laws of physics aren't entirely correct. :P
Yeah NASA is currently working on the ship and engine design. The ship has been named the Enterprise if I remember correctly. The way the engine is suppose to work is like you said create a bubble to bend the space around it stead of traveling through it.
So instead of travel from say one end of a piece of paper to the other with it flat, you would bend the paper so the opposite ends meet and travel from point to point. Then the paper would be flat again when the ship returned to normal time flow.
The main problem though is that it requires a lot of energy (unless dark matter can be found if I am correct) and creates a destructive wave in a forward cone vector.
Still really interesting to think about and what about it.
