Before Rain became immortal, he was living in a war-torn place. The person he loved at that time didn't reciprocate his feelings.

Rain doesn't want to get Machika involved with him at first because he's afraid something bad will happen to her.

Please Forgive Me - David Gray
Rain is drawn to Machika and her bravery. He wants to be with her and doesn't want to be with her.
