This was inspired by the founder saint statue St. Ignatius of Loyola, by Camillo and Giuseppe in 1733. I plan to do several more pieces like this of the other founder saint statues from St. Peter's Basilica. Perhaps Azriel as St. Benedict or Peter of Alcantara.
I changed the scripture from St. Ignatius' book to the first few lines of the hymn Salve Regina. The background was supposed to have an nouveau feel to it. The border and figure was hand drawn in ink. Colored in MS Paint and imported into GIMP for blending.
Honestly, this was one of the toughest pieces I've worked on in a while. It's taken me about two months working on and off because I would just give up on it. I'm going to try to write my name into my art from now on instead of using my ugly watermark (even though I love it, it just covers stuff up! )
