Part 20
The next morning Oki was awaken by the ringing of her phone. She slowly opened her eyes rising from the bed. Light was laying next to her with his arm draped over her. Oki slowly got from the bed so not to wake Light.
She picked up her robe putting it on as she walked over to her phone picking it up. She looked to see who called.
“L… What does he want?” She thought to herself.
Oki opened the door to the room and quietly walked out. She dialed L back walking to her living room. When she rounded the corner Amaterasu stood in the center of the room talking to Ryuk.
“Ryuk!” Oki exclaimed.
“No this is L, Oki. You know you if you are trying to get me to believe you have nothing…”
Oki shook her head as she heard L rambling on in the background, she thought to herself.
“Shit why is he always there when he does not need to be.” “What did you want L?” She quickly said cutting him off.
“Yes…” L said stopping in mid sentence. “I was wondering if I could speak with Light. He seems to have turned off his phone.”
“What makes you think Light is still with me?” Oki asks.
L sighed heavily. “Oki my dear, you know better then to ask that question. Would you like me to tell you what happened between you a Light last night.”
“You bastard! You had us watched last night?!” Oki exclaimed.
Just then, Oki felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Calm down and give me the phone.” Light said as Oki spun to see him standing there.
“I am going to pretend I did not hear what Oki just said. And I am just going to ask you what are you calling for?” Light said calmly but in a rather annoyed tone.
“Well now just the person I need to speak with.” L replies.
“What do you want, L?” Light repeated.
“So how was O-- I mean-- How was your date last night with Oki? Pleasurable I hope?” L snickered as he taunted Light, letting him know he was not far behind him and always would be.
Light enraged at L, he threw Oki’s phone against the wall, shattering it. Oki jumped grabbing at her chest.
Light saw the shock on Oki’s face as he quickly pulled her to him. “I am sorry, Oki.” Light quickly apologized. “I will replace it… Today.”
“I do not care about the stupid phone. What happen? What did L say?” Oki asks.
“He had us followed or he followed us last night.” Light paused as he cursed L under his breath. “That bastard, you’re day is coming, L.”
Light held Oki close to him as they stood in the center of the room. After a few minutes Light pulled away from her.
He was smiling as he looked at Oki and she looked up at him.
“I am not going to let him ruin this for us. I have to be back at headquarters by noon today. Let’s go get you a new phone and spend an enjoyable day together.”
Oki nodded with a smile.
“Go get dressed and then we can get out of here.” Light tells her.
“Alright…” Oki said. She then turned walking back to her room to get ready.
Once she was dressed Light went and got ready himself. Once they were finished they headed out for an enjoyable day together.
---
Their afternoon finally came to an end as Light and Oki approached her front door. Light placed his key into the lock and turned the key. Opening the door Light motioned for Oki to enter. Just as Oki stepped threw the doorway her phone rang. Slightly shocked by this she reaches into her pocket taking it out. She looked at the display with a puzzled look.
“Who is it?” Light asks.
“I am not sure, but the number looks familiar.” Oki told him.
Light took the phone from Oki as she held it up for him to look at. Light got an angered looked on his face as he took the phone from Oki and hit the ignore button.
“Did you know the number, Light?” Oki asks.
“Yeah, it was our favorite person calling.” Light replied.
“L…” Oki exclaimed. “How in Gods name…”
Light cut Oki off saying, “Stupid question, Oki. You forget L can get his hands on just about anything he so wishes.”
“But how did he know my phone was broken?” Oki inquired.
“I am sure he figured it out from the way the call ended between us.” Light said.
Oki nodded, “Well I will talk to you later then. You need to get to work.”
Light leaned forward kissing Oki, “I will call you when I get the chance.”
“Alright…”
“If you need anything or anything happens. You call me, alright.” Light told her.
“I will. Do not worry about me so much. Ammy is here with me. She has cared for me for four years. I am sure she will do fine until I see you again. Oh, and thank you for replacing my phone.”
“You are welcome and either way, you call me if you need me.” Light told her.
Oki smiled as she nodded. Light kissed her again as he turned walking down the walkway headed to work. At the end of the walkway Light turned looking back at Oki one last time. He smiled at her as he mouthed ‘I Love You Oki’.
Oki waved with a smile as he turned walking away.
---
It was first thing in the morning on the second day of Light not being able to see Oki or hearing from her, so he took it as all was well. Light sits at his usual spot at headquarters, L sat next to him. L deep in thought stacking sugar cubes one on top of the other. Light oblivious to this went on with what he was doing.
L sat thoughtful as he pondered the newest evidence Rem and the Death Note brought before him about the Kira killings.
“Rule 1) The human whose name is written in this note shall die. Rule 2) This note will not take effect unless the writer has the subject's face in their mind when writing his or her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected. Rule 3) If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the subject's name, it will happen. Rule 4) If the cause of death is not specified, the subject will simply die of a heart attack. Rule 5) After writing the cause of death, the details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.”
Still in thought, L looked up from his sugar cubes. “This tells me nothing that I want to know. Why are the rules not more explicit? How can they kill with only seeing a face? The note rule says the writer has to have the subject's face in their mind when writing the name? And what roll does the Shinigami really play in all this?” L looked back down at his stack of sugar cubes.
Just then, Lights phone rang. Light so in depth with his resent project. Reached into his pocket flipping the phone open without even looking at who was calling.
“Hello-- Light.” A weakened Oki said.
“Oki, are you alright!” Light exclaimed, his full attention now on the phone call.
L looked quickly over at Light, “Yes! If any one can give me the answers I need, it would be Oki. She owes me that at least, before she dies.”
L gets quickly up from his seat walking toward the door.
Oki chuckles weakly, “I have had better days.”
Light then saw L moving quickly from his seat.
“Hang on Oki…” Light lowers the phone.
“L, where are you going?” Light ask as L moved toward the door.
“To see Oki, I need answers and she can give them to me.”
“What?” Light said in a puzzled tone. Light gets quickly to his feet grabbing his jacket that rest on the back of it.
“Oki, I will be there in a few minutes.”
“Light I…”
“Oki please, just take it easy and I will be there before you know it.” Light tells her.
“Oki… I love you.” Light tells her just before she heard the dial tone.
Within fifteen minutes L and Light were at Oki’s front door. Light having a key unlocks the door walking in L directly behind him. Light immediately goes looking for Oki.
As he walked by the living room he heard Amaterasu call to him.
“Light-- In here.”
Light stopped as he quickly did an about-face, going into the living room. L shocked by this sudden change of direction stopped in the doorway in the living room.
Light saw Oki lying on the floor curled up in a little ball. A blanket wrapped around her like a cocoon.
“Oki…” Light called to her in a panic as he pulled the blanket from her.
“Oki…” he called again, Oki still did not reply.
“How long has she been like this Ammy?” Light looked away from Oki for only a second, “Oki please answer me.” Light pleaded.
“She has been like this for days, Light.” Amaterasu tells him.
“Why didn’t you make her call me?!” Light exclaimed angrily, finally getting Oki unwrapped from the blanket.
“I tried, she would not do it. She knew what you were trying to do, and she did not want to interfere with that.” Amaterasu said.
“There is nothing in this world that is more important then Oki. And what I am doing I am doing for her.”
Light pulled Oki up into his arms, brushing the hair from her face. Oki’s eyes where closed and her breathing was shallow.
“Oki…” Light says in a softer less excited tone, “Oki, please answer me.”
L stood back as he watched everything going on.
“My thoughts about Oki are right. She does have one of these note books and Light can see the shinigami that watches over it.”
“Oki, please…” Light begged pulling her closer to him.
“Light…” Oki responded her tone weaker then when she called.
Light lowered her quickly but gently as he looked in her eyes.
“You little fool. Why wouldn’t you call me? You know I am always here for you no matter what.”
“It’s time…” Oki whispered.
Light pulled back slightly as his eyes widen, “No Oki. I already told you I would not do that.”
“The pain-- Its very where-- I cannot stop it. No matter what I try-- It will not go away.” Oki paused as she clutched at her chest.
“Oki stop this, you need to rest is all. You will be fine after you get some rest.”
Light’s eyes filled with tears as Amaterasu touched Oki’s cheek with the back of her fingers.
”My sweet Oki, your heart has become so weak.” Amaterasu said.
Light looked slowly up at Amaterasu. He tilted his head slightly to the side as he watched a single tear roll down Amaterasu’s cheek.
L looked directly in front of Light seeing nothing before him, but he knew Light was looking at Oki’s shinigami. L looked around the room hoping to find Oki’s note book. Instead L saw a pill bottle lying in the floor with the lid off. He slowly walks over to it picking it up. L stood as he read the label on the bottle.
L looks at Light as he says, “Ask her how many of these Oki took and when did she take them?”
Light looked at L, “Her?”
“Oki’s shinigami.” L replied.
“All of this is getting to you L.” Light chuckled under his breath. “What makes you think Oki has a Shinigami?”
“The fact you are talking to her… Is all I need.” L retorted.
“Now ask her, because if Oki has overdosed we need to get her to medical help before it is too late.”
Light looked down at Oki. Her color was pale and her skin felt clammy.
Light did not have to say a word to Amaterasu as she tells him, “Oki did not overdose. She took her last two pills in the bottle. You should know that Light, Oki could never take her own life.”
Light looked back up at L.
“Are you going to let the girl you love die, right here in your arms.” L questioned.
“Oki would never overdose you know that as well as I do. Life… even hers with the pain she endures means too much to her to just rip it away like that.” Light says.
L sighed at his failed attempt to get Light to talk to the shinigami as he watched.
Just then, Light gets to his feet with Oki in is arms. Her limp lifeless body hung in his arms.
“Where are you going with her, Light?” L asks.
“What do you care? All you came here for was to attempt to retrieve information from her before she died.”
Light walked slowly back to Oki’s room laying her on her bed. After covering her body to keep her warm. Light laid next to her holding her hand in his as their hands rested across Oki’s abdomen.
