I've mentioned previously how the Nordics (both characters and countries) inspire me. It's just that out of all the things that they all seem to value, they seem to value happiness the most. Sure, things may get bad, but there's always something to be happy about, and they're all willing to help each other realize that potential happiness.
And I've especially been listening to/watching this song/AMV so much lately. You see, this one goes beyond just the Nordics, but it's embedded in the chorus of the song, too:
"They will see us waving from such great heights
'Come down now' they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
'Come down now', but we'll stay"
- The Postal Service, Such Great Heights
You see, I'm going to college in just a few weeks. For once, I'm going to be out on my own, and will be beginning the path to make my dream come true. To be honest, I'm a little scared. Double-majoring in English and History will take work, and trying to follow the dream of becoming a world traveler will take a lot of money. Some people I've talked to seem to doubt I can even make it a semester into my college, let alone follow through on my dream. Sometimes it overwhelms me.
But then there's this song, those lyrics and the Nordics' example. Despite the doubt coming from themselves and others, they're not going to give up. They will continue waving from "such great heights," not because it's reasonable, but because it's where they want to be. Once again, despite hardships, despite people telling them they can't, they stay there, because it's what makes them happy. Because they value happiness.
And ultimately, that's what inspires me. I'm going into college blind - I hardly know anyone there, I don't know my instructors, I don't know who I'm rooming with (though, if the roommate matching service my apartment complex offered works, they will be otaku, too), and I don't know much about whether I will be successful or not. But I'm sure as heck going to try. Because it's what will make me happy. Because I value happiness.
And, in closing, I only have one last thing to do...
