Verse 6:
“Captain Dia’ll be so~o happy! We made out well!” For the past hour, Nate and Mattie were tasked with sorting out and appraising the valuables while Dia stayed in her cabin to log and plot their course. The total amount of the lot was 300 gold, enough to last them awhile.
“I still don’t understand why she let him go.” Len picked up a green jewel and examined it.
“It’s who she is.” Nate picked snatched the goblet that Kaito began hiding in his cloak.
“She’s always been like that.” Mattie kept scribbling amounts in the accounting book. “She might seriously injure people and sometimes even maim them, but she’ll avoid killing them at all costs.”
“I always thought that pirate equaled murderer.” Gakupo added to the conversation from his place sitting down and organizing some of the gold and silver utensils.
“She’s different.” Nate shrugged.
“Mm-hm~” Mattie agreed, with his usual smile on his face. “She’s always been different. Actually, Nate and I were signed up with another pirate captain who wasn’t very kind-”
“He wasn’t half the person Captain Dia is.” Nate growled under his breath.
“He always treated his crew like dirt, but especially us.” Mattie stopped writing and smiling. “We’ve always been outcasts. Not just on that ship, but in our villages, and even in our own family. Captain Dia’s the only person who’s ever treated us like real people. She gave us a home, a job, and life.”
“You seem like good people, though. Why would your families hate you?” Curious, Len pressed further, blind to the line he was crossing over.
Thankfully, Nate stopped him before he went too far. “We don’t like to talk about it. If you want, ask Captain Dia. She knows everything there is to know about us.”
Struggling to bring back the bright mood that disappeared in an awkward silence, Kaito offered to bring up the books. However, Mattie regained his composure, shook his head, and explained how Dia doesn’t let anyone other than them in her quarters without an invitation.
