OD: Pokemon vs. Death Note

Welcome to the first OD ^^ (could stand for Otaku Debate, or OverDose, whichever you want). This'll be where I post various debate topics relating to various anime. Some of them will be ones I come up with on my own, some are real debates I've gotten into previous.

Debating is encouraged, but there is a limit to how far I'll let you go.

Okay, on to today's topic~~

All aspects and qualities taken into account, which is a better anime, Pokemon or the much shorter Death Note? (Remember this is the anime, nothing outside the anime here)

Later I'll post the results, as well as my own opinion.

New Rating System

In addition to the numerical score each anime gets in its review, I'm adding a second score, based purely on how much I enjoyed it, which goes as follows:

Full Moon*

So freakin' amazing that it's one of my favorites. Go buy it/watch it/give it hugs right now.

Gibbous

Really dang good, rewatchable, but not something that you're absolutely hooked on.

Half Moon

Eh. Average. You can watch it if you want, but it's not something I'd recommend for anyone.

Crescent

Pretty bad. Best if avoided.

New Moon

Ew. Ew. No. Don't even touch this piece of crap. It's just... disgusting, it's so terrible. No. Ew.

*As to not convolute my reviews with tons of "favorites", only fifteen anime can be given this rank at one time.

I'll update my old reviews to include these ratings as soon as possible, but for those who are too lazy to check:

Angel Beats: Half Moon

.hack//SIGN: Gibbous

Soul Eater: Full Moon

Ao No Exorcist: Half Moon

Deadman Wonderland: Gibbous

Death Note: Full Moon

How This Works...

Reviews

I will do reviews on various media on here, namely movies, comics, and cartoons (maybe some video games later on). I had intended for this world to be less formal than my anime world, so there will be no grading scale incorporated, I will simply state my opinion.

The only rules regarding what I can and can't review is that for movies, I have to have seen them, for comics, I have to have read them, and for cartoons, I have to have seen a fair amount (if not all) of each season (which means I will be reviewing few cartoons ^^' eheh).

Character Capture

Every so often I will do a "Character Capture", in which I will feature I character I enjoy greatly. There are no limits to how many characters I can do from one source, however, I will try to incorporate a variety as to not become repetitive or monotonous.

Requests for Character Captures are open, although if I really do it or not depends on whether I know the character and how much I actually want to feature them.

What is Anime, What is Not?

Anything with an anime style will be counted as anime (same with manga), and hence will not be reviewed on here, no matter the country of origin. This includes shows such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and RWBY. The only exception is Teen Titans, because of how borderline it is.

Also, any adaptation of an anime (i.e. live-action Death Note movie) will be reviewed on my anime blog, not here.

Other

Other things, such as Top 10's and First Impressions will be posted here, too, as well as any exciting news I may have regarding the forms of media I have previously mentioned.

Character Capture: Johnny (Nny) C.

Johnny, the main character of the comic Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, (yes, I'm choosing a comic for my first post), is a, well, homicidal maniac. Angry and violent, he never fails to maim and kill people in the most unique (and, often, hilarious) ways.

With a vague past, he constantly haunted by the demons of his mind, telling him to kill others as well as himself. Between the hilarious moments of his shenanigans, he also gives some deep insight to what it means to live in this world, and what it's worth.

Johnny is the perfect combination of thrilling violence and beautiful tragedy, and that is why he's my first Character Capture.

(Please note: If JtHM were a movie, it'd be rated R. Take note if you ever decide to check it out that there may be some stuff not suited for younger people)

Angel Beats! Review

One week later, I finally get this up...

Angel Beats! was known to be one of the, if not the, most emotional anime of 2012, quickly causing people to fall in love with it. I, personally, like, but not love, it.

Plot Summary

Our main character, wakes up without knowing where he is, who he is (amnesia), or what's going on. He soon learns that he is existing in a sort of purgatory setting where people who had an unsatisfactory death can come to regain what they had lost.

Story

The story does well in the beginning, but as the anime goes on, things feel too rushed and without real detail or good explaining.

I know it's meant to be emotional, but because of its rushed nature, it was hard for me to physically cry during it. I would feel heartstrings pulled, but virtually any anime can do that if they tried. Some of the relationships formed felt forced, too. However, I did go back and watch one of the saddest moments in it, I did end up tearing up, so it does score points for that.

Not to mention the gigantic plothole obviously just shoved in there to explain something that really didn't need to be explained.

7.1

Characters

Angel Beats! features a large cast of interesting characters, but... because of its large cast, a lot of characters get overlooked, and would often not get the explaining that they would rightfully deserve. I would find myself looking at a character or two, thinking... "Who is he/she, again?"

However, when the do focus on a character, they do it amazingly well.

7.5

Animation

The animation for Angel Beats! is stunning. The colors really help characters stand out, and... the whole thing is beautiful.

8.8

Music

Both the opening and ending are beautiful, both in music and in animation. Same with other (and somewhat plentiful) songs with lyrics during the anime, but when it comes to pure instrumental background, I never found anything of note.

8.9

Overall

Beautiful music and animation, but lacking in the character and story departments. This is a good one to watch at least once, and decide if it floats your boat enough to become one to watch again and again.

8.075

Half Moon

Other

I ship Hinata and Yui. I ship them hard.

Also, I don't think they could have done the final ending song any better. Really.
