Deltora Quest Review

Note: The following review is done as accurately as possible. There may be flaws due to the anime's unavailability. Also, because I have read the original books, there may be a slight amount of bias. Also, the review is only of episodes containing the original and main story (1-52).

Plot Summary

The land of Deltora has been taken over by an evil being called the Shadow Lord. Lief has lived in Deltora's capital city of Del his whole live. On his 16th birthday, his father gives him the frame of the Belt of Deltora, which used to hold the gems capable of banishing the Shadow Lord from the land. Now Lief must travel with his companions, Barda and Jasmine, to find the gems and conquer evil.

Story

The story has a formulaic set-up, but not much of a formulaic story. The journey to gather each gem has its different events and challenges, and each challenge is entertaining enough, but not completely involving.

One aspect of the story certain watchers may enjoy is that rather than focus on just fighting, the series also focuses somewhat on puzzle-solving.

There is a major plot twist at a point in the series, which may surprise, but may also be predictable to others.

7.2

Characters

There is very, very little development in the main characters, and not much to make them interesting in any way. However, a few of the side characters, while still not being developed well, are likeable enough to hold their own.

3.9

Animation

The animation has a style that, while not being completely original, has its own way of standing out decently enough. There were a few moments in which its quality went down, but for the most part it held its own.

Another note, the guardians of the gems were done in CGI, helping them stand out in their importance. In some cases this was done very well, but more often than not it didn't blend at all with the anime.

6.1

Music

The English opening and ending were enjoyable enough, but not groundbreaking by any means.

The first Japanese opening, however, grew to be quite enjoyable.

The background music was fair. A track or two caught my attention, but it wasn't glorious by any means.

5.9

Overall

Deltora Quest is a very generic and almost bland anime. It has a decent plot, but lacking in animation, music, and especially characters. With children as its target audience, it doesn't bring much of anything new to older audiences. However, fans of the original books or people looking for a semi-decent fantasy anime may find some enjoyment in it.

Other

I hate how they lowered the target audience from the books. Sure, the books were aimed at about 8 - 12 year-olds, but the anime was aimed at 5-8 year-olds, and I can easily picture the books being adapted to an adult demographic if done right.

Also, the lack of availability for it in subbed is dumb. I prefer the subbed version any day, but the only subbed version I got was an incomplete fansub. The dub was...okay-ish, but I still would pick the subbed version. Some company needs to get its licence.

Also, there were minor changes from the books... nothing too major, the main plotline wasn't changed, but enough to notice.

I found the designs of the Kin to be really obnoxious. This is Deltora Quest, not Pokemon. They didn't look like how I pictured them at all.

...I love Manus.

...And I don't care what you all say, I still love Dain, too. ...He's hot.

Dandy Has a Heart! (Ep. 5 Reaction)

So, I'm finally semi-caught up with Space Dandy, and I loved episode 5. Uh, I'm not sure if you could call them "spoilers", but I'm using spoiler-text anyway for this (for those who want to be as surprised as possible).

Hello Space Dandy meets Wreck-It Ralph. Space Dandy captures a young, undiscovered alien intending to turn her in for the money. However, as they travel together, he soon changes his mind, giving up the money so that she can go live with her only relative - her grandfather. This episode had its laughs just like any other Space Dandy episode, but it also goes to show that it can be more than just a comedy show, it can have heart, too. This episode did raise the bar on my expectations, because now I know that if they just do comedy, they're being lazy. Heck, it could even have a sweet (yet funny) climax and become a more developed show than I expected this to be. If it does well, then maybe this release-in-America-first thing might not be a hit-and-miss after all.

Also, since I'm here, I might as well ask my audience - would you like to see a review of Deltora Quest (the anime)? I've already seen it all, I just don't know whether reviewing it would give me any turnout. So, what do y'all think?
