Phantom Speed Chapter 1

Scene opens to a high school in session. A teacher is talking about the physics of acceleration. The students listen diligently.

Teacher: Acceleration can be defined as what?

He looks around and spots a sleeping student. The teacher becomes slightly annoyed and calls out the student’s name.

Teacher: Yamamoto!

Camera moves to a 16 year old, half-asleep girl Michiko Yamamoto.

Teacher: Are you with us Miss Yamamoto?

Michiko (tired): Yes…I’m sorry Mr. Oomura…

Oomura: Well, can you answer my question?

Michiko: …Huh?

Oomura: I thought as much…Miss Yamamoto; I want you to report to the teacher’s room during lunch.

Michiko: Huh?! What for!?

Oomura: Sleeping in my class…for the fourth time this week!

Michiko puts her head back down in a depressed but comical manner.

Michiko (narration): A fine mess I’ve put myself in again. Hi, I’m Michiko Yamamoto; I’m a junior here at Kamikawa High School deep in the Kyoto region. Apparently, you’ve caught me in another one of my messes. You see, I have a boyfriend who is into the “street racing” scene and he takes me out to Tokyo to see the races. Sometimes, he keeps me out all night and we don’t come home till, at least, four in the morning. Honestly, I find it kinda boring; I mean, who wants to waste their time watching cars race all night? I just don’t see what guys get out of seeing cars move fast.

Transition to the front of the building where there are benches. High school kids are scattered throughout the campus. Camera fixes to a group of girls’ are hanging around.

Girl 1(Harumi): So what happened?

Girl 2(Saori): Yeah, what did you get this time Michiko?

A shot of Michiko depressed and tired is displayed. A humorous look is shown on her face.

Michiko: I got detention…AGAIN!!!

Girl 3(Koyuki): You were out with Hiroki again huh? How long did he keep you out for this time?

Michiko: …we didn’t get home until 5:30…this morning

Harumi: He kept you out that late!? What the heck were you guys doing the whole time?

Michiko: The usual…(imitates her boyfriend’s voice) scoping the highways, looking for a “worthy opponent”…I just don’t get that guy.

Koyuki: Michiko, you’ve got to do something; if you keep this up, you won’t be able to make it into Jukusen University.

Michiko: Yeah I know…

Saori: You know something; every boy you’ve been with is always into racing in some way right?

Michiko (depressed): Yeah…unfortunately…

Scenes of different guys appear as the girls go down the list of Michiko’s past dates.

Harumi: First was that guy Yoshio but he turned out to be a flop. All he ever did was spend time at the arcade playing the racing video games.

Saori: Then there was Masashi but he also turned out the same as the last guy.

Koyuki: And then there is Hiroki and he’s a real racer but he’s totally obsessed with finding, uh, what was that thing again?

Michiko: You mean the “Phantom”?

Koyuki: Yeah. I mean, he doesn’t even know who this “Phantom” is and yet he still wants to find him.

Michiko: I don’t know why I let Hiroki drag me out every night…

Saori: Why don’t you just tell him off; tell him you’re putting your foot down and it’s either racing or you.

Michiko: But I don’t want to come off as a pushy person…

Saori: Come on Michiko; you’re not pushy, you’re just looking out for your own interests. If you’re fed up with it, then tell him.

Michiko: I can’t. I don’t know why but I just can’t. I just want to have a relationship with somebody and all I want from him is to make me feel special; that’s all I really want.
