Phantom Speed Chapter 1

Scene moves to Michiko on the roof of the school where you can see bits of Tokyo from afar. She sadly slumps over the rail.

Michiko (narration): To be put first before anything. I want my boyfriend to “come to my rescue when I’m in trouble” or “be the shoulder I can cry on” or be there for me when I need him most. And yet, I end up with guys like Hiroki who put racing before his girlfriend. Isn’t there anyone out there for me; someone who isn’t into racing? I don’t think I can wait any longer…

Voice: Michiko!

Michiko looks towards the door and sees a boy. He is Hiroki Tanaka, Michiko’s current boyfriend.

Michiko: Hiroki…

Hiroki: I thought I might find you up here.

He walks next to her near the rail.

Hiroki: Hey listen, I’ve some news for you. I heard that the “Phantom” is going to be on Wangan tonight.

Michiko: Oh…really?

He turns to Michiko.

Hiroki: You up for it? I’m feelin’ lucky and my car is ready too. What do you say?

Michiko looks down silently and grips the rail softly as she tries to work up the courage to tell Hiroki off.

Hiroki: Did you hear me? Hey? Helloooo?

Michiko: Tell me something Hiroki.

Hiroki looks at his girlfriend.

Michiko: Why do you go racing every single night even though it’s a school night? What is it that draws you to go out there?

Hiroki: Because it’s in my blood to go out there and race. I get nothing out of being here at school anyway.

Michiko: I see…what about me th-

Hiroki: Anyway, I’ll come by your place around nine all right?

Hiroki walks away leaving Michiko. Michiko turns to the door as Hiroki walks away.

Michiko: Why? Why can’t I just tell him?

Hiroki (flashback): It’s in my blood to go out there and race. I get nothing out of being here at school.

Michiko: He never asks how I feel about this sort of thing. He doesn’t even acknowledge the fact I’m his girlfriend; all he cares about is racing. That’s how they all are…and yet, I can’t break away. Why?
