One Order Of Chicken Noodle Soup Coming Up!

What was the most disgusting thing you've tasted?

Lately it seems that a lot of people are getting sick with sore throats. Perhaps it's because here in the US we've moved into the colder weather with winter approaching. Or perhaps it's just that time of year for cold and flu bugs to be running around.

Either way, it got me to thinking about the thread over at OtakuBoards where the question was asked: What was the most disgusting thing you've tasted? Of course you had the standard foods and other odd things, but medicines such as cough syrup kept popping up in the thread.

So you tell me, which is worse, some random odd food or some medicine that you've had to take in the past when you were sick. So far, the worse thing I've had was some medicine. I swear, it's like they want you to not take your meds and stay sick! =P That stuff is just vile!

Thanksgiving Fun

Thanksgiving plans?

If you live in the United States then you already know that one of the most looked forward to holidays is fast approaching. Thanksgiving, which is a harvest festival where family and friends get together to enjoy good food and celebrate what they are thankful for. If you’re in Canada, then you have already enjoyed this holiday and those of us in the States hope you had an excellent time. ;)

Now over at OtakuBoards, members have been discussing what they have in mind for this year’s holiday, as well as sharing what they did. I know that for myself it’s something I always look forward to. I positively love making turkey and all sorts of scrumptious goodies for the day.

Then later after the feast, it’s often a wide variety of social events from watching sports, playing games together to braving the crowds on what’s known as ‘black Friday’ to do some holiday shopping. I always have a good time.

So what do all of you like to do? Any special traditions or dishes that your family makes? If you’re not in a country that has this holiday, what do you have that is similar?

Barack Obama: The Next President of the United States

Barack Obama: Confirmed to be 44th President of the United States

I'm sure all of you have heard the news about Barack Obama winning the presidential election. On November 4 in a historic moment, he became the first African American to be the president of the United States. In just one night, he went from being a presidential hopeful to being the actual presidential elect.

I may not be old enough to vote, but even I can't help but feel excited over the news. There's been quite a bit of discussion over at OtakuBoards as members are gathering to talk about what they think of the recent election. Some members are giddy with excitement while others are more cautious.

Regardless, I know I'm not the only one who is looking forward to when he's sworn into office in January. I think it’s going to be an interesting term to watch unfold. How about the rest of you? What do you think?

Obama Assassination?

Assassination attempt, first of many?

If you haven't seen it yet, one of the newest threads in The Lounge section of OtakuBoards is about the recent news on how a plot to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was broken up. The story can be found here: Article

Personally I find it a bit sad and disappointing that there are people in the world who are willing to turn to violence in an attempt to solve things instead of working for reform. What do you think?

The Lounge Update

Ramen: Staple or Obsession?

This seems to be an important/relevant question for many anime fans. I personally never understood the Ramen phenomenon, though - perhaps someone can explain it to me.

I assume that the Ramen brands people are talking about are essentially dried noodles that are put in water and heated, with a little sachet of flavouring?

I have often wondered whether most people genuinely liked this type of food before becoming a fan of anime, or whether noodles/ramen have sort of achieved a kind of status because of their obviously asian origin. This question interests me greatly because both Ramen and other Japanese snacks seem to have achieved a powerful cult status within the anime community.

As for me, I must admit, I'm not a big fan of packet/instant noodles. If I were to eat noodles, I'd probably prefer to actually visit a restaurant and have a proper noodle soup (especially one with chicken, pork and vegetables - there's a place near my house that does amazing Japanese soups).

And if I ever have a dish like that, I tend to always have udon noodles, as these are my favourite.

For those of you who actually eat cooked noodle/soup dishes, do you have a favourite noodle type that you always choose? Am I using the wrong word - should I say "ramen" instead of "noodle"? I don't know. I only know that "ramen" is not commonly used in Australia, even by the Japanese themselves!

Also, another related question: other than noodles/ramen, what is your favourite Japanese-style snack?

A work colleague brought these funny things into the office the other day; they were basically like pretzel sticks with spicy tomato flavouring. They were certainly unique and very tasty.
