Chapter 1: I Really Really Don't Belong Here, Do I?
'I wonder what Angel is doing?' I thought. Tugging at my sleeves I approached my new school thinking about how my best friend wouldn't be there. I had accepted a full ride to come here, a private high school supposedly for rich or extremely smart kids, or at least that's what I had heard. since money has been tight in my family. My best friend had just moved away, so I was here on my own, and I was very nervous. What if no one here likes me? I mean, I'm just going into high school, I knew that it was unlikely no one would be my friend, but still...it weighed heavy on my mind. I continued to walk, lost in my thoughts.
"Hey look out evasive manure! Jump out of the way, something?!"
"H-Huh?" I felt a body slam into me and my back hit the ground.
"Ow, I'm sorry, I called heads up though. Are you alright?" I glanced at whoever it was I collided with. He was a red headed boy, holding his head with a book laying next to his other arm.
"Oh I’m really sorry...it's my first day here and I'm a little distracted." It was then that I noticed his friendly smile and light, dusty blue eyes. He stood up and held his hand out to me.
"Don't worry its my first day here to. We must be in the same graduating class then. My name's Dai, what's yours?" He asked. I took his hand and he helped me up.
"Clary...oh, let me get your book." I bent down and picked it up. It was a beautiful hard cover, exquisitely bound. And it was a Victorian novel I had read in my spare time. "This, is a classic, is it for one of your classes?" I asked. Just then, I heard a strong voice boom from behind me. A very tall guy with deep black hair was sprinting towards us.
"DAI BAYLOCK YOU GIVE ME THAT BOOK BACK RIGHT NOW!" I flinched a little and went to turn away from the confrontation but Dai held my hand firmly and pulled me quickly along.
"Come on." He laughed.
"H-Hey! What are you doing?!" I gasped. I tried pullin my hand free but it wouldn’t budge. I could hear the other boy’s quick footsteps behind us.
“I'm just having a little fun. I've been in the same class as him since grade school so it's fine." I felt something brush the back of my shoulder and as I turned my head to look, a pair of iridescent wings had sprouted from Dai’s back. "Can you fly?" He asked. I was so dumbfounded that I couldn’t speak. Glancing back, Dai scooped me up quickly in his arms. "Never mind." He jumped into the air and floated for a second, and then began to fly up.
"W-Wait! Wings?! Put me down! What's happening?!" I grabbed onto him tightly and shut my eyes tightly. "No I'm dreaming, this isn't real!" I told myself out loud.
"Don't worry so much, I promise I won't drop you. Besides we're not going that far.” I kept my eyes shut for the next couple minutes, hoping that I would wake up soon, though the sensation of being held didn’t go away. "See that was fun wasn't it?" I opened my eyes to see Dai’s eyes not two inches from my own. I scrambled out of his arms and sat down on a bench that was near us. It looked like we were in some kind of courtyard, with flowers and elegant iron benches with cobblestone under our feet.
"...Don't mind me. I'm just waiting to wake up." I smiled at him.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to scare you. Are you alright?" He leaned against the bench arm and looked at me. "So what are you? Pixie, Fairy, Angel, Your too pretty to be like Lance." He chuckled with a slight smirk. I felt my cheeks heat up a little.
"Umm...human? I don't know what you're talking about..." I informed him.
"Well I'm a pixie. This is just my almost human form. I can't make a complete human form yet." He tucked his hair behind his ears, revealing them to be pointy. "You know your cute when you blush." Before I could warn him, the boy who had been chasing us raced up behind Dai and wacked him on the head.
"That's for making me run all over the school and getting lost. You know we don't have time to play games Dai, we have an orientation meeting to go to." The boy sighed and looked at me, and I was met with molten amber colored eyes. "I'm so sorry that he got you involved in his little game. May I have my book back please?" I looked in my arms and somehow, I was still clutching the bound book.
"I'm so sorry!" I held it out for him and he very gently took it from my grip. "Dai is quite the kidder, saying he's a pixie and stuff. Um, do you know where orientation is?" I asked.
“Ow Lance, that hurt!” Dai complained.
"Thank you and he's not lying. He is a pixie. I'm a vampire, but as you can see I don't sparkle like that popular book says we do." He sighed and shook his head, which made me giggle. "I can't believe I even got bored enough to read that series. But yet I did."
"We can all go together." Dai said with a wide smile.
"A, vampire?" I asked, very confused. Lance just stared at me, and I opened my mouth to say something, but then closed it again. His gaze was so intense it was like I couldn’t move. Dai floated up next to Lance’s head and pulled Lance’s lip up, revealing sharp canines, typical of a vampire in the movies.
“See?” Dai said. Lance Pushed Dai away and grimaced.
"How many time's have I told you not to do that Dai. Your hands taste disgusting."
"I thought we were going to be late if we didn't get going Lance." Dai smiled innocently.
"I'm not dreaming." I looked at them, shocked. There was no way this was happening to me, this kind of stuff didn’t exist! But I was seeing it with my own eyes, so it had to be real. "Orientation, then I'll tell them I'm am certainly not at the right school." I decided.
"Why do you say that?" Dai asked. I hopped up and handed Lance my scholarship papers I had folded up in my pocket.
“I got these, but it must have been a mistake, see I’m a completely normal human with normal human powers and abilities…” I said with a small laugh.
"Not everyone can get in this school miss." Lance said as he read over it. “You got a ull ride here? No expense to you at all…” He said, amazed.
"Her names Clary. Clary this is Lance." Dai interrupted.
"I'm sorry, pleased to meet you.” I smiled at Lance. He smiled softly back.
“Lance.” He said. We all started walking toward where orientation assembly was taking place. Once we got there I walked in and looked around the auditorium. There weren’t a ton of kids here, and I was starting to get a little nervous.
"I'm sure that you'll have fun here." Dai plopped down next to a hooded kid and patted the seat next to him.
"Ladies first." Lance motioned.
"Oh, thank you..." I sat down by Dai, and Lance was on the end. The kid on the other side of Dai opened an eye and glanced over. His eyes were a startling green that took my breath away.
"I thought I heard you Lance. Have you thought of getting your hair cut, long hair doesn't suit you." The boy said. I looked back and forth between them a few times and then timidly spoke up.
"...um, hello." The green eyes boy looked at me.
"Hey. You have a sweet smell to you. I'm sure that Lance noticed too." He said. My face instantly got hot.
"Hey now Blake don't be getting any ideas." Dai crossed his arms.
"And what's a little pixie like yourself going to do about it?" The other boy smirked and raised his eyebrows. Lance interjected.
"Stop it both of you. You two have been going at it since middle school. Don't you think that you two can just get along?" Lance stated with a bit of frustration in his voice.
“I, smell sweet?” I asked Lance quietly.
"Everyone has a unique smell to them. Usually you can tell if the person is friendly or not by it." He answered.
"Mister book himself has all the answers." The green eyes Blake leaned back in his chair. "Maybe you should crawl out of your books and live a little. You have a pretty girl sitting next to you.” His bluntness shocked me, and my face continued to grow hotter.
"Excuse me? I don't think I caught your name? I'm Clary." I asked, trying to be polite.
"It's Blake." He answered.
"He's a trouble maker." Dai rolled his eyes. Lance snickered.
"Your one to talk Dai." He said.
"Yeah Dai...says the one who pretty much kidnapped me..." I muttered and looked at Blake. "Nice to meet you." He just closed his eyes and leaned back once more.
“It’s a pleasure.” Just then, an important looking older lady walked in and looked straight at Blake.
"Blake take that hood off. You know your not allowed to have your hood up in school." She ordered. Blake sighed but reluctantly obliged.
"Yes ma'am." I looked over as he removed his hood and stared. He had two cat ears sticking up out of his deep blue hair.
"Oh right, Blake is a Neko. I forgot to tell you." Dai said, smiling happily. I knew my eyes were sparkling. I was a cat person, and to see this in front of me was completely unbelievable. Blake caught me staring.
"Yes I'm a neko, haven't you ever seen one before?" He asked, a discontented look on his face.
"He has a tail to go with the ears." Dai chirped and chuckled.
"Oh..." I suddenly looked away. "S-Sorry, no I haven't, I'm only human."
"You’re here so you’re probably more then that." Blake sighed.
"Maybe, I guess we will see." I said, waiting for the headmistress to begin speaking.
